    It's called a Rheostat if you go to a harware store or HVAC supply. Hydro stores carry them under different brands, a popular one is called the "Speedster". It's just a little black switch box with a dial and a switch on it and a cord attached. Just ask someone at the store if you don't know where to look. Hydro store guys will scratch their heads if you say "Rheostat" so say "fan speed control" instead. Make sure your fan has a two(or more) speed motor before you add a control to it. A single speed motor is only ment to operate at ONE speed(obviously). If you use a control on a single speed motor you'll burn it up right quick. It's not too hard to check; just look at the sticker on the motor that has all the various ratings on it. If it's not on there, google the make and model to find out.
