I went ahead and trimmed off one of the completely dead small leaves. What should I do with the leaf on the left? The base of it is fried but the end is unharmed. Will that eventually die?

I'd say it's a very good idea to practice before hand. I ordered two seeds from Attitude, and the first one I ordered never germinated. I'm not sure whether it was just a bad seed or not, but I was pretty anxious about it the whole time. I would have felt a lot more comfortable if I practiced...
