I'd personally recommend a good ec meter and cheap ph drops, because the latter is always accurate.

Get your water and add your calmag at suggested rate for ro water, add your nutrients and ph it.

I imagine the reset button will manually cycle from ON to AUTO to OFF to AUTO and when held down will reset.
I'm guessing on that because there's normally a manual button.
I've not used that one.
But normally you hit program or hold it down.
The area you are fine tuning might flash or maybe it doesn't.
If it flashes on the days then keep singularly pressing week button until all days are showing.

You weren't watering enough.
Look at the original pot, it looks like it's never seen moisture on the sides.
Probably chronic underwatering leading to dry areas and the water running through rather than soaking the whole medium.
The fact bottom watering has fixed the issue would suggest so...
