I am honestly not sure but have a look at this picture. You can see there is some dark blotches appearing at the base usually progressing to yellowish color and then turning brown and at the same time the individual fingers also turning to thin out at the same spot.
I usually see leaf dying out from outside to inside in problems so it's been worrying me for past couple of days now. You're right they're stem leaves. I guess I'll let it keep going then.

That could be the case too, although this is a clone of a plant I grew last year and that plant transitioned ever so slowly.
