I'm flying from san Jose at like 10pm. So putting it in my luggage not carry on is the way to go?

They went through my bags coming to cali, I'm assuming because I had a hair drier and flat iron in it and the cords probably set something off? I also consodered putting it in a packet of my jeans that's in my luggage and not bring it on the plane. I've done it by accident before where it looked...

Please excuse the newbie-Ness, but I'm flying from san Jose, ca to boston, ma tonight and I have a gram I wanted to bring back. I was thinking of hallowing out some cigarettes and putting it in there and replacing the exposed end with the tobacco and bringing it with me in my carry on stuff...
