The July 2011 High Times Magazine has an article showing a canadian grow room using vertical bulbs.... 3x 1000w HPS in the bloom in a custom made cooling chamber

they mounted the bulbs and chamber in the center of a 5 foot by 5 foot area(dont know how tall) with plants in PVC tubing coming outa the tube at roughly 45 degree angles every 10 inches up the tube another plant. they hang the PVC tubes in a circle around the vertical bulbs and have hydro ton rocks in the PVC tubes on a drip system drain to waste

They are claiming that this setup produces 4 pounds per 1000w HPS used. the say this is accomplshed due to the light shining in 360 degrees where a normal bulb in shade or tube has a reflector which loses the light.....

I've designed my own cheaper version of the entire setup and am looking to see if I can find an air cool tube that will allow the 1000w HPS to shine 360 like their setup in canada.... would be fuckin insain to crank out 4p's per light

put all the lights you want to use on top, if you go with your idea you probably will lose yield. all lights on top and prune all lower growth
Care to elaborate? Or you are just one of those guys that just say something just to say something? Anyway...

I'm no expert but I was facing the same dilemma cause I'm going for something similar for my next grow. Did some reading around and gathered opinions and decided to go with the big lights above and the 400W in vertical. That said I would go with the 400W as vertical for the simple reason that if you have the 400W ones in between your plants you will have enough light to enhance side growth without the risk of burning them. Also the 1000W on top will provide enough penetration to reach deep into the canopy and boost those top colas too that tend to be the big ones anyway.
