I also had:
Cali Connection 808 Headband fem, I killed it because I had the light too far and it stretched like crazy while I was at work. In less than 24 hours after placing it in the seed starter it had grown 6 inches of very thin stem and never recovered
BCBD Girl Scout Cookie fem, Turned out to be a hermie so I murdered it.
Barneys Farm Top Dawg fem, this plant was 100% male so I killed it also.

Grow Strategy/ Techniques:

Flower plants are clones taken off of mother plants that were planted August 20th 2013 by me,
Plants were cloned in October sometime however this was before I started keeping notes.
They were kept under T5 flouro during this period.
Plants were transplanted November 13th from solo cups at about 6 inches tall to the 3 gallon sacks.
Originally I started them off under the mh only set at 50% on my ballast or 300w for one and a half weeks on 18 hrs of light
then I set the ballast to 75% 450w mh for one and a half weeks
I then turned up to 100% 600w until December 13th with 18 hrs of light.

During this time I had cuttings sexing in a different area to make sure all plants were fem, results were only the two strains I'm keeping are fem because one is hermie and one is male, at this point I had an extra Jack Herer clone to replace the Top Dawg at about week 2 of veg and another Jack Herer plant to replace the GSC 3 weeks into veg. I picked the Jack Herer because it is a super lanky sativa to fill out the tent quicker.

My goal for this grow is to obtain personal head stash quality bud for my personal medicinal use, as I am a patient in MI. The problem with where I live is almost everyone has high quality Indica's but it is very rare to find such high quality sativa dominant plants and I prefer to smoke all day and still achieve things during the day. Unfortunately I only have a very small space to grow stretchy, tall sativa plants, the result of this is I have chosen to super crop and LST my plants to try to maintain the main stem at around 8 to 10 inches and create a sea of green. I did this using two tomato cages for 2 of the JH plants, zip ties. On the tangerine dream I used a few stakes and the soft pot handles and zip ties. The plants in the tomato cages have around 20 to 30 zip ties tying branches around. I read somewhere on this forum "I had the plant bound so much we needed a safe word" lol.

To prevent plant stretch I slowly induced flowering by reducing the light by one hour a day from 18 to 12, I also kept the mh in for the time transition and the first 14 days of 12/12 which started on December 19th. Once I started inducing flowering I added the T8 7200k and the two T5 units with the 3000k spectrum to indicate bloom with a more pure and less harsh light spectrum from the mh. 7 days later I removed the 7200k T8 and added the UV reptile lamp which I heard can increase finishing speed as well as increase resin production. Increased finishing speed is nice for long flowering sativas because its less energy if they finish a week earlier and the increased resin production will really help the amount of bho I will be able to extract from the finished trim and such so I hope the UV helps. I leave the UV on its own timer which comes on in the middle of the light period for 3 hours then 1/2 hour of then 3 hours more on time to cover the middle time period (this is where most UV light is present naturally therefore should be the most natural). On January 2nd 2014 I replaced the MH with the HPS bulb and started it off on 450W and will transition to 600w full time on January 8th.

Off topic rant on UV Light:
I have been doing quite a bit of reading on this topic and have found many opinions. First of all UV light can cause cancer and is dangerous as a result do not enter room when uv light is on, or wear protective sunglasses and fully cover skin. Second I have heard UV is actually more beneficial during veg, as a result I will add a UV to my veg next time around. Third I read UV may increase THC by as much as 3%. Plus the extra resin amount, if it works is worth it in my opinion. However as this is my first grow it will be hard to tell if it has any effect. Maybe someday I will do a comparison once I get two tents going.

Just enjoyed some Northern Lights and Gigabud while typing this up. Hope it makes sense :bigjoint:

What you all came to see, unfortunately I only have my Iphone to take pictures with.

Please feel free to respond to this with any questions, comments or random thoughts!

I turned the plants too a full 600w intensity HPS all day. I also increased the temperatures to 79 degrees f and 40-45% rh and am beginning a quick flush period to reduce salt build up of nutes. I also reduced the light to 11:45 hrs of on. This should increase the plants sense that winter is coming. I will slowly reduce time through out the cycle.

Plants seem to have responded well and are looking and smelling wonderfully. When I rub the tangerine dream plant fan leave and smell my fingers it smells like a sweet citrus fruit. SO a tangerine seems fitting  I hope the bud tastes this good if not better. Jack Herer is harder to determine the scent although it is very odorous.
IMG_0704.jpgJack Herer#3 I have never seen the leaves this erect before.
IMG_0703.jpgTangerine Dream
IMG_0705.jpgJack Herer #1 again I should say I am using the numbering system only to label which plant it is. They all have the same mother and are cloned.

Next week Ill get pics without the hps on for everyone

The plants are all starting to produce trichomes all over the place now. JH#1 is about 19 inches tall by 18 inches across, tangerine dream is also about 18x18 in. JH#2 is about 18 inches tall by 16 inches across and JH#3 is about 11 inches tall and is just a single stalk of buds pretty much. I also added two Headband plants (bag seed) that are about 4 weeks old. I decided to throw them into the tent because of the cold temps in my veg/mother room was preventing them from growing. If one HB plant is male I will put it into a separate area to collect pollen and try to make some seeds from a small bottom bud on my JH and TD.

Plants are all looking pretty good despite a ph problem. Flushed the soil and run off ph is back around 6-6.2 My headband seedlings I just threw in the flower tent got the worst of it, but the good news is they showed their first pistils today! Both are female so I will take some quick clones from them just in case one of them turns out to be the best bud
I ever smoked or something.

IMG_0779.jpg JH#1 Top cola
IMG_0771.jpgTangerine Dream
IMG_0775.jpg JH #2 This plant was topped at 6 inches tall to form 4 main colas. It stretched quite a bit compared to JH #1
IMG_0777.jpgJH #1:this cola is approximately the same height as the cola in the pic above and as you can see it is all bud no stem visible. This plant stretched much less because i didnt top it. I only supercropped and lst. If you run this plant I would not recommend topping.

Quick up date on some cool and not so cool events.

My Zilla 2 ft T8 UVB lamb burned out only one month after use and there is no warranty on it. However I called the company and they said they would send me a new one anyways. I am glad because they are around 35 dollars a bulb/month X 12 months = $420 a year. Which despite being one of my favorite numbers is not really a budget friendly number. Hopefully this next one lasts longer or I may get rid of the UV at least until I can grow outside.

The cool news or should I say subcool news is I got The Flav and Chernobyl by TGA Subcool seeds. Looking forward to my next grow. Hoping to get a little bit bigger of a space and run a vscrog set up possibly. I think vscrog would be fun because often times during this grow I though to myself I wish I had more plants to tie up this is fun. Lol maybe that joy will wear off after a few grows. I sure hope not tho.

IMG_0848.jpgWhen I first brought the girls home, cant wait to see them bloom.

Just to update on the flower tent. Plants are looking pretty good despite the previously mentioned pH problems. I have gotten these resolved an plants are recovering. Only lost a few fan leaves to deficiencies. I also transplanted my two biggest plants (td and jh#1) from 3 to 5 gallon smart pots. I have read mixed reviews on transplanting during flowering but the plants are doing fine and no signs of shock. HALFWAY DONE! so now the buds should start getting nice and fat.

The headband plants are both looking much better as well and so far it looks like hb#1 is the keeper but time will tell (also the clones rooting is important haha).

So today is day 51 but I got photos right before lights out last night then dabbed out to celebrate my birthday today. Plus I have been trying RSO for the past 4 days Have felt slightly better although I think the potency could be low or maybe my tolerance is high. :-P

Plants are starting to swell up a little.

Temps have still been cold and plants are turning lots of colors. Trichomes are all still clear the effects of the ph problem are still rearing their ugly head, cant wait to try a new system next grow. The best lessons are from mistakes right? Round 2 should always build off so next grow should be better. Lets see...

Great job, I think you will be happy with the results of your first grow.
I hope you keep this journal updated... subbed

Thanks Cascadian, welcome in hope you enjoy the ride. I have been trying to update this journal up to date with once weekly updates. This is for my personal benefit and also to give something back to this great community with so much collective experience and knowledge. Figure a few more photos of the most beautiful plant in the world can't hurt anybody but the case against it right!

The plants have now been flowering for around 8 weeks from when the first pistils showed so the Jack Herer is in the early part of the seed companies recommended harvest window. I am expecting the Jack Herer to go the full 10 weeks however because it is an extremely sativa dom pheno. The light cycle is 11:15 on 12:45 off trying to encourage ripeness and mimic nature as best as I can. I have switched the light back to the Metal Halide and the 2700K flouro side lighting because I have read this encourages bud density, and trichome production. If this is true I'm all for it and even if it isn't I can get better pictures with the MH and see trich color much better. I have also been reducing the ppm of the nutes from 1000 to 750 then I'll do one more feeding at 500 ppm then flush. The buds are starting to get heavy and a little droop has begun :weed:. And some photos

IMG_1071.jpgLittle headband #1 clone is coming around!IMG_1146.jpgIMG_1147.jpg and the bud isn't doing so bad either.
HB#2 won't be a keeper due to whats looking like very low yield. Although I will give it one more go at least.

IMG_1178.jpg Full tent week 9 of 12/12
IMG_1072.jpgand last but not least just wanted to show a quick example of the resilience and absolute desire to survive cannabis plants have. The first picture shows a snap I made on my JH mother plant. It was over 6 feet tall so decided to try and super crop some of the branches to lower it and make it a bush without wasting its growth because I ideally want to flower this plant in a single plant scrog 4x4 tent or outdoor if plans work out. Either way a bush is better than wasting half the plants growth cutting it. So I bent the plant but the inner core had hardened to the point where twisting, pinching and bending just snapped it. The plant has been growing just fine despite this and I made a support system using bamboo and taped the part where the branch snapped. As you can see in the second picture the plant is doing just fine.
IMG_1074.jpgGotta love this weed, it grows anywhere no matter what conditions and punishment you give it. In fact I think it begs for the punishment.

Peace

Great job on the pics, they are looking good. Some cloudy trichs in there but they all look like they can go a bit longer, depends on your preference too. My lowest yielding was my best tasting bud, of course I didnt take a clone of it. Definitely judge HB#1 after you have cured and sampled it.
For sure it is amazing how much abuse they take and come back even stronger!
Btw, I harvested my JH at 69 days, it could have gone longer but turned out nice.

Thank you medicinehuman, it smells yummy too. The Tangerine Dream literally smells like ripping into a tangerine. The JH is a little harder to place, I've gotten hints of northern lights #5 and a mostly just sweet skunkiness, but not smelling to much of that peppery hazyness yet.

Thank you Cascadian. I definitely will need to invest In a better camera some day because using my iphone thru the 30x mag is a PITA to get a good picture sometimes. Also a great reminder not to judge a plant until it has finished its story. I have read in multiple places that people have the lowest yielding plant be the most flavorful. I would consider saving the clone to breed with someday if it is that good because Headband is in my top five strains at the moment. The cloudy trichomes on JH#3 are only on that purple top, which is crazy to me because it from the same mother as the other two JH plants and it is the only purple top and the only trichomes turning, I wonder what environmental factors caused this. The rest of them look like they will be going at least 69 days as they are all clear.

Day 70 of 12/12 and the plants are getting really heavy. I have had to prop/zip tie up a few. I also started flushing on 2/23 at cascadians advice. I am glad I did because the next day I saw approx 10% amber trichomes on the sugar leaves on both strains. I also harvested a JH bud early. This was the top from JH #3 because it was all cloudy at the very top with some amber. This is the purple bud in the macro shot above. Plus I really wanted to try my new dry box out and also try my meds out!!!

IMG_1245.jpg and dry enough to smoke at 2.7 g including stem after 3.5 days of fast drying. With out cure the bud is still obviously grassy tasting but has a sweet smell like fruit and berries kind of, with a slight black pepper smell. The taste is the inverse with a black pepper inhale and exhale taste with a slight sweet taste. I'm hoping a nice dry and cure will really pull the flavors out of this bud. Either way its pretty frosty and did the job.

Nice job on those plants man, they look amazing. Keeping them that green through harvest isn't easy. Love the look of that Jack Herer bud too, it looks like it developed differently than mine though. Probably just a pheno difference. I bet that Tangerine Dream is going to be great smoke.

Glad to see it turning out so well. +rep for a great grow...

First of all I just want to say thank you for the encouragement and positive vibes Cascadian! I honestly don't think they are green enough! But it is my first time growing so I guess I don't have any comparison.
Is your Jack Herer from the BC bud depot, sensi seeds, greenhouse seed company/strain hunters, clone only, or idk? Mine is the BC bud depot which is just an imitation of the original. Your plant looks much more indica dominant from the one pic I just looked at.
When I bought seeds the first time I had no clue and just went of the descriptions on herbies. Dumb... I learned to always read! But these two pick and mix single seeds are looking rather beautiful.
I can't wait to smoke the Tangerine Dream. I haven't cut a tester yet cause I want IT ALL when its ready. Kicking myself for not getting more clones prepped and the seedlings sexed earlier. Oh well I got Chernobyl, The Flav by TGA seeds and Delicious Cotton candy vegging for next go.

Peace

Nice strain line up for the next grow. I have not been disappointed by a TGA strain yet Btw. Almost picked up a TGA Vortex clone the other day but chose NYC Sour Diesel instead.
The Jack Herer I bought was a clone from a dispensary and I don't know it's breeder. It does have more indica growth characteristics and is a more purple pheno.
