well i have started my very first grow and am very excited and anxious. the last two months have been a real learning curve. being so new i would hate to mess things up with my new babies so i,ve started this thread hoping to get some help and tips. for example ive read a lot on temps and thought the best temp during light hours was 72 and you dont want to get above 77, so i put my light a little far away but then read 77 is fine and 80 is ok to? what is the hottest your grow room should ever get, i'm talking about the max, like when your plants would die. Whats the most ideal temp? Thats just a start. here are some pictures. about two weeks into veg. Thank you to all who help my first grow in any way. 11/15/09 one and a half weed old biggest train. second pic is same plant 4 days later. next one is about 4 days behind the others. The next 2 are a random bag seed. this plant grew the fastest and had the hardest transplant. it grows leafs that were curled at the tips. hows it look to you all? sure does stink so i'm hoping to keep it. the last is my 100% legal medical garden.

some details about my grow. im using a 400w switchable ballast so i can use mh for veg and hps for flowering. I'm using roots organic soil by aurora in about 3 1/2 to 4 gallon pots. distilled water is given about every 3 days in the amount of 1/4 gallon each.(not sure how much to give them) Lights are set to 18 on 6 off with high temps around 75 to 78, lows around 60. a fan is on during the light hours bringing in cold air.(not sure if a fan should be on 27/7) the plants are about two weeks old.

Hi ya :) Welcome to RIU. I believe you will find some useful info here. Check it out especially the section about watering your plants... Make sure you have phMeter and soil moisturemeter. Those two are the most important things and your great helper since they leave nothing to guesswork. Key here is to keep the soil at 6.5 pH, so you have to measure the pH of your plant water, fertilizer+plant water mix. At the beginning you don't have to water frequently. Top of the soil should be close to dry, middle part should be moist and bottom part would be moist to wet (a bit).

Anyhow, your plants look good. As long as you are not overzealous you will be fine and like other good growers on forums you will gain experience with each time passing. Have fun and happy growing :)

Mentioned above about PH and moisture meter. I got my simple PH and moisture meters for a 5 bucks a piece at a garden shop. My finger has replaced the moisture meter, and the PH, well that hasn't come out of the package yet.......

Wow its a small world. i got to say i love the way our state is changing. not too hard to get your card. neway the guy at the grow shop said the soil has a perfect ph, and im feeding straight distilled water for now so should be good for a wile right. i also bought a water meter and it has helped but getting more in a routine for watering. at first it was water, water, water and most likely slow'd them down a bit. also wondering about nutrients. in a few weeks i want to start feeding them so i need to get prepared for that. any ideas? thanks for the link mv400

Distilled water's pH ranges between 7 and 7.7, spring water's is 7.5 keep that one in mind. Fertilizers, you would most likely find good info in every grow journal and at that link. Anyhow, always start with half or 1/4 strength and raise slowly to full strength if you are gonna use chemical fertilizers. If you are gonna use organic fertilizers it would be hard to overdose them since they are slow release. Oh if you wanna prepare your own organic fertilizer tea this link have full of useful info.

Finally, some chemical fertilizers have Nitrogen in Ammonia (NH4, NH3) (what is in human and animal urine) form. Be careful about that. Always make sure N is in Nitrate (NO3) form like SodiumNitrate. Happy growing :)

Haha, Butte, not a place you will catch me. I would rather walk over the pass without shoes, or camp out in Sagebrush Sams

today i'm going to water, most likely. do you all think 1/4 gall is a good amount for these plants. my biggest trainwreck has grow a new set of leafs with seven individual leafs on them in two days. my random bag seed plant is still looking rough but i've noticed new top growth and under growth. the very bottom leafs turned yellow and lower leafs look shriveled up and dry. the root ball got lose when i transplanted and i might have kinked the stem when it happened. included is a picture of all six plants. the last one is a close up of the sick looking one.

Doesn't look to bad. It will definitely make it. The ww plant we PMed about is a little bigger than them. Looks good. So its a 400w Switchable ballast?
