spiralstaircase's 2nd grow (bagseed+cfls)

so i'm back with a new setup (still on the very cheap side) and going for round 2. i've got 4 seeds going right now. 2 from seeds i've collected and 2 from a friend. the lights are set on 12/12 because there is a full size flowering plant in with them, so we will see how it goes. the full size plant (approximately 6 months old) is actually mine from my last grow that i gave to a friend when i had to leave for the summer. her buds are really spaced out and not dense at all. i'm not sure if this is because of the conditions my friend had it in or if its just the way that particular plant grows. to be honest she is pretty pathetic looking; really stretched out and droopy cuz her stems are thin. but i'm gonna give her a little bit of time and see if i can't beef her up a little. as for the babies, one popped up yesterday and looks like another one will be showing some leaves by the end of today. i soaked all the seeds in a wet paper towel till they popped before putting them in dirt. i don't really care to list all the technical stuff unless somebody asks. but anyway, time for a few pics. oh, and the pic of the bud is what i got off my other plant from my first grow. :)

bought a couple more lights and a small fan today, but i still need to pick up a couple more Y splitters. i will put up a few pics once i get everything all set up. all 4 seedings are above soil now. the first two that popped up look a little stretched, but not bad. i think it will help once i get the extra lights in there. the big girl looks pretty much the same, so i think i'm gonna give her another week and if she's not changing much i'll probably chop her.

so, pics as promised. for whatever reason i have had a hard time finding the Y socket splitters. finally found them at lowes but unfortunately they only had one left so i'll have to wait a little longer to get the second one.

so i thought i would throw up some good pics of the babies, and in addition to their lovely cup labels of A, B, C and D i thought i would give them some fun names too. here they are in order Plant A: Athena, Plant B: Persephone, Plant C: Gaia, and Plant D: Nyx. i figured if i wanted good plants i should give them good names, so they are all named after greek goddesses. lol, i'm a dork. :P

i know the beginning of a grow is always kind of a little boring, but if anybody has any comments/suggestions/questions please feel free to post in here. my last grow journal was mostly me posting, so it would be nice to get a little more feedback from other people. anyway, thats it for now, happy growing!

alright, got some new pics. again, in order
Plant A - 7 days
Plant B - 6 days
Plant C - 8 days
Plant D - 10 days

the last one is of my sad looking buds on my plant that i got back from a friend. i've found lots of new hairs popping up but i don't know that she will really produce much more. plus she has really weak branches and can barely support the buds as it is. i also think its rootbound, but i don't want to put it through the stress of a transplant this late in the game. basically i'm just waiting a bit longer so that i'm satisfied there's not much else i can do for her, and then i'm gonna chop her to make more room for the new kids.

You need to get light block plastic. or some kind of material that will block light from coming in. thats very bad for your flowering plant you have in there.

lowes will sell some plastic polo that is black. double it up and its light proof.

get more lights, get more ventilation in there as well.

just a quick picture update. everything seems be be going well other than its been pretty hot the last couple days but there don't appear to be any ill effects from it.

Plant A - 12 days
Plant B - 11 days

yo man what are the details on your lights. How many do you have, spectrums, watts? For the babies i mean.

i have 4 20w daylight spectrum bulbs on the 4 babies. but there are also 2 20w warm spectrum bulbs in the grow area, they just aren't directed at the small plants. lights are on a 12/12 cycle for now because of the flowering plant.

so i decided to harvest my flowering plant tonight. i decided i would rather have the extra space and the benefit of all 6 lights on the babies than to keep the flowering plant when there was no real sign that it was going to improve much. i've also increased the amount of time the lights are on to give them more light as well. anyway, here they are...

Plant A - 16 days
Plant B - 15 days
Plant C - 17 days
Plant D - 19 days

alright, so i picked up some quart sized containers tonight and got plants C and D transplanted from the 9 oz cups to the new ones. i think i might have broken some of the roots while transplanting plant C, but hopefully it wasn't too bad. will probably do the other two plants tomorrow. i think i will let them veg for another week or so and then switch them into flowering. yeah, thats about all i got right now. pictures tomorrow probably.

ok, so here are the kids after the transplant. they all seem to be taking it well. as you can tell plants A and B (which were seeds from my personal collecting) are considerably shorter than plants C and D (seed from a friend). i think its interesting though that all 4 seem to have slight variations in their growth. i'm also excited to see which ones will be females since i was lucky with my last grow (2 plants=2 females), though thats still some time away before i will know. anyway, here are the pictures. two of each plant: top and side view.

Plant A - 20 days
Plant B - 19 days
Plant C - 21 days
Plant D - 23 days

in addition to the transplant i have changed the lights to be on 24/7 which i think has stimulated a lot of growth the last couple days.

btw, anybody out there paying any attention to this....?

alright, well everything is looking good. been giving them some weak nutes about every other watering. i'm gonna pick up a couple more 2700k bulbs in the next day or so since i plan to switch them into flowering in about a week. i'm loving plant B and am hoping it will turn out to be female since it is so nice and compact. i'm hoping to end up with two females, since thats probably the best number for my space when they start getting big. anyway, here they are as of today.

Plant A - 24 days
Plant B - 23 days
Plant C - 25 days
Plant D - 27 days

Yo, how much did the light bulbs cost you. Im growing outdoors right now but I think 3 of my babies died cause the containers were like 6 inches wide... was that too much? I want to start growing indoors but money is sort of tight at the moment.

i've sort of acquired my stuff slowly since money is a continual issue with me as well. i'd say i've probably spent about $30 on bulbs and maybe another $30-40 on other things like y splitters, a fan, potting soil, pots, etc...

as for container size you can start them in any size container pretty much. i like to start them in plastic cups (something like solo cups) since its cheap and i find it easier to control my watering that way. if your wanting a grow journal to look at from start to finish you can check out my first grow which i had even less for than this one!

on another note, i am planning to switch over to 12/12 and change out my bulbs to start flowering tomorrow. pics either tonight or tomorrow i think.

ok, so picture time.

alright, so i'm pretty much ecstatic right now. i changed the lights last night about an hour before the lights clicked off for the night, and i get up today and check on them and find that i have one confirmed female plant already!!!! so, plant D is female and i'm going to keep a close eye on plant C as i spotted something that could be a preflower (i'm just not sure yet if its male or female).
