Adventures of a Grow Addict

I've been slacking off on sharing my growing adventures since my 1st grow but I assure you I have been growing my arse off!
Oh yeah... I was addicted to growing my own weed right from the start. Its been a very worth while endeavor to say the least. I'm learning alot about soil and gardening and organics and its just been awesome.
So I'm starting this thread just to post some of my growing adventures. Its not so much A grow journal, more of a growING journal. (hope that's ok?)
So I'll probably post some pics from time to time to get RIU's take on things. Sharing and comparing, growing and showing, livin and learnin...
After my first grow (all CFL's and flouros) I got an HPS to flower with and did a few grows experimented with some LST. Went pretty well. A few pics of those in my gallery. I've got a few nice jars full from those grows:blsmoke:
So right now I've got a few flowering. One is straight up (WAY up lol), one has just a little bit of LST (it was tied down just once and then i pruned the backside). Those two are 4 weeks 12/12.
I'm on to some experimenting with topping too. I've done Uncle Bens technique for 4 colas on a few plants, and topped a few regular style too.
So I've got 1 female with 4 heads that's been flowering 13 days, and another one which apparently I FIM'ed LMAO because i meant to top it regular and It has a 3rd head growing out of the middle. I dont know the sex on that one yet, its been 12/12 for less than a week. So its a mix bag of tricks.
Feel free to speak your mind, I can take it as well as I can give it ;)
By the way, I'm a big on DIY, and even bigger on organics. I use CFL's, T-12's, and 400w HPS.
So thats how I roll. Here is my crew >

And these are from my last harvest, the LST grow>

They could not be happier. So far so good. For the record, here's what I'm growing in. This is for vegging>
32 Qts Hyponex Soil -Organic material and Primarily derived from hypnum Peat, Forest products or Compost, Sand and Perlite.
32 Qts New Era potting mix - 40% peat, 35% composted organic material, 20% vermiculite, 5% sand. This is very light like a starter mix.
15 lbs worm castings
4 Qts perlite
1 cup sand
1/2 cup lime
10 Tbls Blood meal
12 Tbls Bone meal
NO MIRACLE GROW
No nutes at all during veg and I'm putting 1 TBLS organic Big Bloom (0.01-0.2-0.7) per gallon in flower. Just because I still have some to use up.
For a flowering mix I took the above recipe and left out the blood meal (N) and replaced it with happy frog bat guano (0-5-0), and I'm lookin into adding some greensand for potassium and micros, but have not done so as of yet. I also like to use molasses once during veg and again once during flower.
So if anyone has used Greensand im looking for opinions on that stuff, as I'm leaning in that direction...

TYVM LL I gotta give a good amount of credit to the worm castings. My plants are just loving them! This is my 1st grow using castings and I'm sold. I'm looking to get a vermicompost bin started. I can use the compost, the castings, and the worms (fishing trip!)

The plan as it is right now is to put 1 or 2 plants into the flower tent every 3 weeks. I can fit a max of 8 plants in the tent. This way the 1st batch should be done by the time the 4th batch is ready to go in and the tent wont be crowded.
Today is 5 weeks for the 1st 2. They're doing great.
The 2nd 2 are actually one, but more like 4 LOL. The 4 headed monster. that one should be 2 weeks then. lemme check...Yup day 13
then the next 2 are not due until next week. But the 4 plants I have vegging are sativa(ish) and are going to take more than 9 weeks to flower so....one went in last week and the rest i put into flower today, a week early. They're all topped, and have been vegging 4 weeks under T12's. The one I put in last week is showing pre flowers. Looks like a male. I'll wait a day or two more to be sure.
So the only thing left vegging is my mom and 4 clones I'm trying to root but failing miserably:neutral:. its been over 2 weeks and no roots yet. long story with these clones lol.
So the tent's pretty crowded but in addition to the HPS, I've got 4X26 watt CFL's in there above the smaller plants and shining on the side of the bigger ones. So plenty of light still for all.

key word, heating pad. my clones root in 5-7 days. (i had the same issue). do u have a dome? here is pics of clones i cut last wednesday. i dont know what u stick ur clones in, i use rock wool. if u dont want to use the rock wool then use a rapid rooter cube. with this u will have no issues. the only think i dont like is my heating pad only runs for a couple of hours at a time, so i have to keep turning it on. the clones are Rhino,

Hmmm...its funny you say heating pad because I'm convinced that my problem is thats its already too hot. I need a cooling pad lol. the temps in my veg area never go below 80. Always 80-85. Water holds more oxygen at lower temperature. Clones are supposed to root best at 68-78. This is the cloner I made>

They stay alive forever but no roots. It might be the strain. their mother took almost 4 weeks to root. She was so tiny and had only one leaf and stayed alive for 4 friggin weeks in a cup before she rooted. I can do one at a time in a cup, but I'll probably have to get some rapid rooters if i want multiple clones. At least untill it gets cooler.

u have a air stone in there, or is it a spray system? do u know the temp of the water? if u are having heat probs i would try to insolate it, know i dont know if it will keep it hot or cooler. just a thought.

LOL Its kinda tricky. You can't GO there. You just have to BE there. If you can make yourself comfortable in any situation regardless of the circumstances you will BE there.bongsmilie:peace:

QUOTE: "u have a air stone in there, or is it a spray system? do u know the temp of the water?"
Airstone. The water temp should be equal to the veg cab temp. 80+ Maybe a degree or 2 cooler because its floor level. Its the coolest place I can use thats why I veg there. I dont think its a coincidence that my successful cloneing attempts have come in the winter and early spring before it got too warm. I'm going to try just one clone in a cup with the airstone. This is what worked before. The airstone should provide more Oxygen per volume of water in the small cup versus the big bowl. I've got 4 weeks before i need to have anything ready to flower so.....1 at a time will be fine if i can root it in a week or so.
Update on the plant I put to flower last week....Its a male. :-(
Down to six in flower. 3 girls and 3 yet to show. One has 3 tops, one has 4 tops, and one has 6 tops. As long as 1 of em is a girl I'm happy.

Just snapped this pick. The big one in the back is REALLY close to the light, but you can see hurricane lantern cooltube I made, and its doing its job. Not the slightest sign of heat stress on that top. Its 5-6 inches from the bulb. And its getting PHAT!
The 4 headed monster aka #9 is lookin very nice.

My mom. She's about 80 days veg now. She's putting out more cuttings than I can handle. Shame when I have to trim her and throw them out.
She lives under 2x 23W CFL's.
She came from this little runt >

Ok its been a week since I added the 3 topped plants that I had vegging.
All three showed female on sunday morning, one week after putting them on 12/12. What luck!
So i had to rearrange the tent a bit. A good photo op.
All my plants vegged for only 4 weeks.
#0 Has 3 heads. Topped above the 2nd node. It would have 4 but I cut 1 off (it was a runt lol)

#1 has 4 heads. 2 big ones and 2 smaller ones. Topped above the 3rd node.

#2 has 6 heads. Topped above the 3rd node, and then the 2 inside branches were topped again to make 6 tops.

Then I have these 2 that have been flowering for 6 weeks now.
#5 had a little LST as a child.

And #22. (2 shots)Just growing str8 up normal, and doing very well. I though it was going to outgrow my tent but it stopped stretching about 6 inches from the light and is just filling out now. Whew....

And # 9 The 4 headed monster. This is a beautiful example of Uncle Bens topping technique. Grown to 5-6 nodes then topped above the 2nd true node. Has 4 strong colas growing. 3 weeks 12/12 today.

Hey IGLAW! There seems to be a lot of differing opinions on growing methods and their yeild so it's really cool to see all of those techniques being used simultaniously (LST, Topping, and just letting it be). Have you ever tried Scrog? I came across this portable Scrog idea which I'm considering for my next go around. Which of the methods that you've tried gave you the highest yield? Great looking plants! :peace: OUT!

Thats why I'm trying different things, to see what works best for me. I'm doing different techniques with different strains so I cant really do a DIRECT comparison. But I do have a good idea of what each technique is all about
I've never tried Scrog, I probably never will. Its a form of LST in my book. But it seems like it would make it very difficult to move the plant around. I like to put them in the shower if/when I need to flush. Or just be able to rearrange my tent when adding/removing plants.
I was really liking the LST method. Its a really productive technique especially if you are limited on height, buts its great even if you have plenty of room.
At this point though, I'm going to have to say that I'm most impressed with the results (so far)of Uncles Bens Topping Method for 4 colas. Considering the plant, the pot, and the space that the plant and pot take up, it seems like this is the method that will yeild the most in that space.
Its been just over 7 weeks for my oldest flowering plants. Looks like they'll go at least 10 weeks though. Hairs have barely begun to change color. Buds are getting PHAT.
I took some pics, but it said I have exceeded my limit for uploads. it only let me upload 2 of 'em. I have put a lot of pictures up since the beginning.
So if anyone knows what I have to do to be able to upload more pics, please let me know.
Heres the 2 it let me post.

I'm the same way. I move my plants in and out of the cabinet almost daily to get a good look at them. I originally felt that Scrog would be a very difficult method to use for perpetual harvest but I think the idea above would work great.

I'm using LST on my flowering plants but they're getting to the point where it's getting difficult to place them all evenly under the light because for the most part they're growing sideways. Unfortunately I'm limited on square footage not height.

At this point though, I'm going to have to say that I'm most impressed with the results (so far)of Uncles Bens Topping Method for 4 colas. Considering the plant, the pot, and the space that the plant and pot take up, it seems like this is the method that will yeild the most in that space.
Good! I'm really looking forward to my next grow to see how UB's topping method works for me.
