Oh no, this is just not right.

How can I sleep at night knowing that there is a 8" tarantula out there somewhere a couple of thousand miles away. What if some stupid f--k imports one and releases it in FLA. We already have some pretty frightful non-native invasive species. No, no, no, this is just not right. ~

Of all of the creepy and crawly things that you can think of, tarantulas probably are near the top of the list when it comes to scariness. Well, get ready to add another terrifying arachnid to your list, because a new type of tarantula has been discovered in northern Sri Lanka.

Ranil Nanayakkara, a local researcher, and his team found the tiger spider and named it Poecilotheria rajaei, after a local police investigator, Michael Rajakumar Purajah. Purajah helped the team of scientists navigate the remote area where the spider was found.

The genus Poecilotheria is known for being fast, colorful, and venomous. But why does this newly discovered species stand out from all the rest in its genus? It's huge, for one thing. Its leg span is up to 8 inches across, about the length of your face. It also has distinctive markings on its underside and legs that are geometrically patterned and described as daffodil-yellow and gray.

So what do these spiders eat? They have a taste for small snakes, birds, and mice. Nanayakkara explained why they were able to find P. rajaei in an unusual place -- an old doctor's office. "They prefer well-established old trees, but due to deforestation, the number have dwindled and due to lack of suitable habitat, they enter old buildings."

One thing is for sure -- unless you're a spider lover, you would not want to cross paths with this guy. He just might stop you in your tracks.

We were visiting friends in the Ozarks & my youngest son caught a tarantula behind the church.
Damn thing was almost as big as my hand (I'm 6'3") and gave me a serious start.
I didn't expect to see one of those, especially that large.

Ever see a tall 50+ year old man run off screaming, grey pony tail flapping in his wake ?

If you have, chances are it was me.

@ Barnbuster, your attachment didn't come through.
Edit: I see it now.

No, all spiders must die. Well, at least all spiders within the county that I live in.

You should have seen the size of the one that crawled out of vent when I turned on the air conditioner in my car. I almost drove into the car next to me.

I used to live very near the Glades & am a fishing fanatic.
My brother and I would routinely take a canoe down in the park & fish the back country. Usually the route we took was an old overgrown canal & the freakin banana spiders would make their webs stretch across the darn thing. My brother being the control freak he is, always wanted to be in the back of the canoe & invariably I'd get driven right into these massive webs.
Not a big deal until you consider the size of the spider that just got dropped on your back.

I literally jumped out of the boat several times.
Gives me the creeps just thinking of those.

Looking back now, I see he wasn't so much the control freak as just a smarter older brother.

LOL Funny.

I almost died once when a friend driving freaked out over a bee in the car, he was more afraid of the bee than the 2 tons vehicles coming at us at 65 mph.
