7.5 ounces off of 1 plant

Ok, so my title says it all. I recently pulled 7.5 ounces dried off of 1 AK47 plant in a 2x2 area under a 400 watt hps.

Now that I have hopefully lured some of you in here with my statement, I have a question:

At which point was my light wasteful? And by that I mean would I of pulled that much off of the same plant, with lets say a 250w hps in a 2x2 area? I want to know if I would have gotten the same results off of less light, and how much light would be my maximum for that grow space.

Also, I will be setting up a new grow this 4/20/2012. It will feature my 2 new Area51 LED Lights (100x3), and some GH Waterfarms that I picked up for cheap at a local hydro store going out of business. I am going to grow my AK47 again, just so I can compare 390 total watts of quality LED vs 400 watts of quality Hortilux hps.

You pulled 0.525gpw. I'm guessing you used a SCROG. Probably could have done the same with a 250w. They have a 2x2 footprint. Try aiming for 1.0gpw next time. That seems to be the current bar for horizontal lighting.

Would be interested to see your harvest results on the LED grow. From all I have seen so far flowering with LED's get's you less yield. I don't have any experience with them (for that reason) but I would like to see if someone can match yields with them. So far I haven't seen it.

Doesn't necasserily have to be a scrog.. But In that space using a 250 a scrog could get u cloe

Considering he said that he had 1 plant and was growing it under a 400w light I can pretty much say that it's a SURE bet it was a SCROG. In order to get that kind of weight off a straight grow you would have to LST the shit out of it and you would end up with a plant so big a 400w wouldn't cover half of it's footprint.

SCROGs are cool setups, but it's hardly the only way to pull 7.5 off of one plant under 400 watts, a tomato cage works fine, you can do it with stakes as well, only they are a complete waste of time lol. I get 10-12 oz under each 600 without even trying hard in tomato cages. Not that SCROGs aren't awesome, they are.

Kyle, I think that you could probably pull it off with a 250, I'd honestly be more excited to see that happen than with an LED. If you can show that you can grow the same amount or more with less wattage, that could actually help people because most people can afford to downgrade rather than upgrade to LEDs to save on energy.

You'd probably have to lower the light a little though, so I'm not sure if it will still reach the sides of the tent completely. Good luck!

Like a said in others posts in my opinion will be impossible compare a HPS w/ LED, BIG YIELDS are you looking for? GO W/ HPS. otherwise if you are having any kind of problem with temperature or noises maybe u can choose LEDs, Actually I pretty much can say just be carefully with the 3W chips they will warm up your green house too, In my opinion the 3W will bring the best results, but Do you prepare to pay 4 or 5 times more than a HPS system to receive less?

Do not be fool to believe with a LED you can harvest more than w/ you are using a HPS not nowadays maybe on the future!!

I hear ya man; it's just the whole "1 plant" thing that makes me suspect as to doing it any other way. I use tomato cages myself. I mean, 1 plant has to get pretty darn big to give you 7.5 ounces man. Not knocking you but 10-12 oz. off a 600 is not that hard; considering you can fit 4 nice sized plants under there. Try getting 8 ounces off 1 plant any other way but SCROG under a 400w. I'm not too sure it can be done. If so, not easily.

7.5 off one plant under a 400w is good if you ask me. its hard to get a huge yield on just one plant indoors without vegging the hell out of it (6wks minimum.) and LST, supercropping, and topping the living crap out of it.

you probably would have had better results with more plants. the 400w i believe can cover a 3x3 space. why only a 2x2?

how many grows have you done? you dont sound like an amateur considering you got that much off one plant. biggest yield ive ever gotten off one plant indoors was 4.5 oz but ive never grown just one plant under a light b4

I am fairly new, I just compiled a LOT of research before making my first move. I didn't feel like investing in good equipment only to fuck it up later. I went with a 2x2 because my closet space is small, but I recently upgraded to the maximum I can fit in there which is 36x24 inches (3x2). This time I am going to do 2 plants (scrog) under 2 LED panels; each panel being 195 watts of 3watt LEDs. So in theory, each plant will have its own 195 watt LED panel. In total that is 390 watts of LED, which I paid 365 dollars for each panel.

Now, my comparison of LED vs HPS wont be incredibly accurate, as I will be switching from coco coir in air pots to general hydroponics water farms (top drip/dwc). Also, like I said before, I am upgrading from a 2x2 to a 3x2. However, my 3x2 is actually 36x20 inches, giving it a total of 5 square feet, which is a slight upgrade from my 2x2 which is a total of 4 square feet.

New grow vs old grow:
scrog vs scrog
ak47 vs ak47
2 plants vs 1 plant
36"x20" vs 24"x24" of growth space
2 195w (390w) LED panels vs a 400w HPS
general hydroponics waterfarm vs coco coir in air pots
gh hydro nutes vs canna coco line (keeping rhizo, cannazym and boost)

Even though some variables are different, I do believe this is till VERY close and will give us a decent comparison of LED vs HPS. My last grow I had to veg longer because it was only 1 plant and it took a bit of time to fill the screen. This time I plan on more growth because I will have 2 plants instead of 1, so hopefully I wont have to veg as long. However, I will have 1 extra square foot of screen to fill.

I am obviously hoping for better results with my LED panels, however I am not being too optimistic because I don't see the sense in hyping a product up only for it to fail. I do feel good things bout LED technology though. The prices are a bit high, and they might not yield as much as an HPS (at least I don't know yet), however, they will eventually be a great alternative to a closet grower because of less noise from a high powered fan, and less heat from a high pressured bulb, plus slight reduction in your energy bill while still getting very similar yields.

Yea, I suppose I didn't consider the fact that it would be harder to do that off of one plant...but if I had a 3 ft. tomato cage I don't think I'd have a problem getting that off of one plant...10 gal pot..although I suppose I'd probably start throwing some twine across the top to help the colas anyways lol...jeez. I guess I'd still have the ability to move the plant around at least a little, that's the only reason I don't use SCROG, I like the style.

Me too, I like SCROG and the theory behind it but I can't be trying to move around a screen all the time and water them as well. Just not the setup if you have multiple plants.

for a 2x2 the light would cover the area but with 250w whos to say it'll have the same resin production as the 400w??...anyways show a pic if your gonna say 7.5oz off one plant

in order to make big yields with any 1 plant its lots of work lst'ng fimming and supercropping i just finished recently 4 plant 4 pound harvest plants were 5 feet tall by litterally 5 feet wide vegged 41 days in 25 gallon totes heres a idea on stems and overall plant 2000 watts 5 feet by 8 foot scrog table was very impressed for first time scrog next scrog is 8 foot by 20 foot 16 plant 16 + pound harvest 8000 watts training plants prior to transplant into 23 gallon pots for veg and 50 gallon for flower

Great points!! The main prob I see with going lower wattage is the need to lower the light. The lower the light the smaller the footprint and coverage area. And the actual footprint of the light isn't always the most efficient. The "sweet spot" is gonna be smaller.
TheManWithThePlan, that's my personal best off one plant as well, and that was with 400w. 4.5 off 1 plant is respectable, I don't care WHO ya are! 7.5 deserves bragging rights!!

Most of my pics are in my grow journal.

But here you go:

I've been running a combo of HID and LED and so far, being new, I've seen a slightly smaller yeild with LED but the quality has been much higher with LED. The buds from LED look like they were dipped in sugar!

I bet you will get better results than me since you scrog, my plan is to do the same in the near future.

Great job with your 400. I'll be watching to see how the LED scrog works out. +rep bro

ive done a sog that came out to 6.7 oz of dried goods using a 150 watt hps...i think its question of time...not light...how much time was wasted....well if u think about it....time= light...so if you can pull a 7 oz plant in 3 months rather then 4 months...well you have used less light...right?...or am i high as a kite, maybe both lol
