NAFTA and CAFTA are primarily responsible for the "giant sucking sound" that would be American jobs going bye-bye. As Ross Perot often quoted, the passage of these bills would result in loss of national wealth and independence. See, free trade is great for the economy, but really only on the small to midsize business scale (imho) because at these levels businesses are typically family owned and are more aware of their impact economically and environmentally. Large global corporations churn out such large amounts of useless material that they have to turn a blind eye to certain conditions, such as environmental and human impact in the interest of profit.
China is the best example. The working conditions are absolutely horrifying, so that civilized nations can enjoy all the mcdonalds toys and cheap goods as they can buy. A typical chinese worker has work days that often go into triple overtime due to time constraints and deadlines. They get 30 minute sleep breaks AT THEIR STATION for their entire nights rest. If they dont comply they get fired. Shanxi Province. Look it up. Industrial waste is pumped into the yangtse and yellow rivers, causing the river to flow orange and toxic yellow. People are unable to grow with anything but polluted waters and have to consume contaminated water. Some have open sores on their skin from exposure to various solvents in low-hanging mist clouds around their homes.
This is all okay though, because the chinese government doesnt give a fuck about human rights or a lkiving wage, or 8-8-8. They could give a shit about the environment. Our global corporations dont care either, as waste disposal is a stubborn cost. If the work could be done overseas where they dont have to worry about fees for dumping and EPA standards... Well, wouldnt that be wonderful? Wont have to think of new, innovative ways to manufacture stuff while being proactive about the environment, that will cost money. profits wont pay the CEOs millions of dollar a year salary.
How about we give local and small businesses a fair chance again. Lets give the people their bailout. Offer small businesses that employ 100% american staff tax breaks and incentives such as low rates on small business loans and debt forgival. On the flipside, for the global corporations who are able to evade taxes by having a majority of business outside of US... they get tarriffed and taxed like a motherfucker. Employ workers in mexico for 3 dollars an hour while final assembly is done in texas? Well for every part of the car made outside of the US there is a VAT applied. They seem to be enjoying the thought of a VAT well stick it there. And since they want regulation, regulate the amount a damn car costs. $5,000 for the very first compressed air cars, that can be leased out by the government in order to pay for a program that enables people to obtain these cars and then sort of rent to own. The program would include a fee to apply that would cover the cost of employee wages. Would lower pollution and promote people purchasing small, economical transportation, and offering another market for jobs.
Then, on top of that, for each american company that is skirting through loopholes and whatnot, fined for going through loopholes, and fucking with the economic soundness of the united states! Federal reserve, pull the plug. BOOM. Investigate banks on derivatives and shit, then jail them for consumer fraud, ponzi schemes, whatever. Just string em up like chickens. Jail time, Jail time, Jail time, class action suits, etc. Lets use the system to the full advantage.
Jury Nullification is another great start. For all those jailed on pot crimes, or any other petty bullshit, lets use our damned american rights and call bullshit. Then we would have more people ready to work. The other side of the coin for the corporations is a relaxation on their (going to be) much higher taxation if they move their factories from out of the country and employ americans. Hitting the corps in their wallet is the worst you could do. And if they pull out of the us completely, americans will expand the local, small business market to fill the gaps, employing more americans AND generating spending, bringing us out of the depression.
Alll the while, we could focus on novel attempts at alternative energy and sustainability as an everyday word. the earth can no longer sustain our current growth rate. We will continue until food, water, and energy supplies can only sustain a certain number of people, then nature, being cyclical, will take care of the population numbers. However, there is a whole wide sky of trillions and trillions of stars. Theres definitely some importance in putting money in achieving intergalactic exploration and travel, for habitat, fuel, and resources. Hell, maybe even some trade routes? In the 1500's we explored the seas in search of new land. Now we go in search of new land. Maybe we will meet new peoples. Ill bet innovation without regulation will create jobs.
Man I could go on and on...
