hey i was wondering where would be the best place for mylar and what it's traditional use was?? i went to home depot and ace and neither one carried it. any help woud be appreciated

I think at Home Depot you want to ask for visqueen and that should put you in the area of the plastic rolls and you should be able to find the poly that is white on one side and black on the other, haven't tried yet as I just figured out the name today. It won't be mylar it will be the white poly plastic.

mylar is pretty expensive, and has a short lifespan. if you want to buy something once, get astro-foil. this shit lasts forever! you can clean it and it is very easy to work with. it's something you can get at most home despots!

emergency blankets are made of mylar. you can find it in the camping section at walmart

Doesn't really matter what side of the Al foil you use, though I use the shiny side for specular intensity. If your aluminized Mylar is actually thick enough to surpass regular Al foil, it also surpasses it in IR reflectivity(hot spots), which can fry your plants.
Specular and diffuse reflections are completely separate, but reflectance includes both of them. And depending on how reflectance is measured.. greatly affects the outcome. I was reading this study today about trademarked diffuse reflectors, and how Al foil, Mylar, even copier paper compare.
Copier papier had the greater peak. Next was Al foil. At the bottom, nearly half of Al foil, was Al Mylar. The scientists admitted that the test was heavily in favor of diffuse reflectors, and even a mirror would fare extremely poorly. Extremely diffuse reflectance is also called Lambertian reflectance, after Johann Heinrich Lambert, who developed the formulas to measure and predict this phenomenon.

i heard that the glossy metallic wrapping paper (like what you wrap presents with at christmas)
is a thin grade mylar,
it obviously has 2 be the one with silver on the back,

When I want fresh chips(fries, to you Europeans), I'll keep them in a mylar bag. 
Mylar is an inferior diffuse reflector compared to Al foil, but is a superior specular reflector.
It's a give/take. Essentially they're the same, since they're both aluminum.
And only if you get thick aluminized Mylar. Otherwise, Mylar itself, in the most basic form, is a semi-transparent plastic. And a lot of light can just go right through a thin aluminum coating.
Regardless, Mylar was never intended for hot applications, and takes heat quite poorly... with the crinkling up, and the melting, and the possible self-combustion. No thanks.
