Breeding for authentic sativa happiness. Mextiza, Thai, Angola, Senegal...

Wondering how Oaxacan 79 this looks to you? It is CBG red snake, day 35 or so.
It has the shortest internodes and quickest flowering compared to its siblings and has a honey smell but no tree, fruit or spice to it.
I can't say, I haven't grown any Oaxaca '79, but I've grown quite a lot of Mextiza, that is very very similar to Oaxaca '79, and a lot of Red Snakes. I've also grown plenty of landraces from all over the world and the only clear thing is that these RS and Mextiza, like the Thai Angola and others, are much better in effect and taste than any landrace. They are waaaay stronger. Not to the point of the "sativas" sold comercially that are just hybrids and are heavy in the body. These are much better in effect, but that's my opinion.

I think the important thing is that you like the effect. The % of Oaxacan blood is, from a practical point of view, irrelevant.

By the way, what's that in your pictures? Male flowers or seeds? I can't see

Thanks. I appreciate your perspective. I have been enjoying the TRSC Ukhrul/various afghans for a while but was interested in trying something different.

It's female in that image, very heavily seeded. About 10-14 days after pollination.

This was the male. I only had 4 and as it's only available direct from CBG wanted to have some more to explore in the future. Glad the female with the most seeds is the fast flowering and squat.

I would wait to test all the females to see how they smoke before pollinating. Have you tried them?

No but I don't have a lot of money to throw at seeds the last year so it was more of a case of making more seeds with what was available and exploring them properly when the world is a bit less tricky to navigate you know and get some cuts to try.

For smoke - i have managed to root a cut and may attempt a reveg.

I have plenty of middle east/Afghan/Pakistani/Indian/hybrid seed stockpiled but very little central American so that was the main intention.

I did forget to mention at the start thanks for your long running efforts in this thread, it was why I wanted to ask for your perspective on something else Oaxaca based.

TAM is a fascinating project.

I've just harvested some TAM #15. This time I let them to flower for more than 9 weeks, in fact they are two days short to 11 weeks. What I've experienced is that for some reason they had a new explosive flower growth, so they kept growing and growing flowers with no signs of maturation. If the smoke was great at 9 weeks, I believe this is going to be even better. Production increased a lot as well.

I'm sorry I didn't take the pics before harvest, so the plants are upside down and the pictures aren't very nice. But they show the size of the buds. There is something magical with this resin, I've got this aroma in my hands and I'm hypnotized with it.

Nice buds!

Sativas will do that late flower thing all the time, it's like foxtails on steroids. Every pure Sativa that I've grown out from Central America did exactly that same thing. I had one that I grew out from seeds, which I had picked up while smoking down in Panama, I cut buds off of it every couple weeks for two months and I didn't begin to select harvest any until about 10 weeks. That wasn't the infamous Panama red, it was actually a very dark green, it looked a lot like yours.

Just curious, why cut off buds every couple weeks - wouldn't they not be ripe yet?

I had some buds where the trics had changed colors and some that were still not even full at all yet. It didn't work the greatest to do it that way, I might have been better to just let it run, but it seemed like it would just keep putting out new bud so why not harvest what was ready? The problem of course is that the new unfinished bud isn't the tops it's the bottom part of the plant, almost in reverse of how you would normally select harvest with Indicas back then.

Got a good haul of seeds off her too with pollen from the mango thai male. And still not a single nanner even though her brothers were total hermies. What a beast!!

Sorry, what is this? For sure looks like a pure sativa, or near pure. How much flowering time?

Cheers

Several days ago I planted some seeds made with frozen male Mextiza pollen and the four selected F1 (Thai-Angola)xMextiza plants, and the sprouts are starting to appear over the surface.

This back-cross is the last attempt to get viable seeds showing the best characteristics of the Mextiza strain, that is extremely endogamic and under the risk of its definitive disappearance. The result of this work will depends on the quality of the male I used and also on the genetic dominance of the characteristics I look for: lemon-honey aroma, fast maturation and stimulating happy effect.

It is a promising cross, after several failed crosses and combinations that have ended in failure along the last seven or eight years. In these years I've learnt that isn't that easy to save a strain with its genetic pool impoverished.

Let's see what happens now.

I've been busy and this thread was neglected, but I'm still working. I've found some seeds in the fridge that were very satisfying to grow and smoke, it was a cross I made several years ago (2015) between a Mextiza male that happened to be very good, and an old school Jack Herer elite clone from the 90s.

These are some pictures from the 2016 harvest. The result was very limey, even more than Mextiza, although the JH was varnish smelling. And VERY strong. Let's see how healthy they are after these years.

I've put more than a dozen of seeds into wet papel towers. Let's see.

This is the first male I found in the backcross (Mextiza x Thai Angola) x Mextiza. I call these seeds M3X. This one has been flowering for just 7 days and I sexed it a couple of days ago. It smells very sweet and tasty, and its structure is the classical slender sativa Mextiza. I guess this backcross will be quite similar to the original Mextiza.
