How many BTU can be COOLED \w EXHAUST before AC is needed

I have
8x8 tent
315 watt CMH
600 watt mh\hps
480 watt quantum board
630 watt cob\blurple

6885 BTU total

3 oscilating fans
2x6" inline fans for exhaust
Passive intake

I grow in my basement
Ambient temp in summer outside of tent is max 24c or 75f but Its getting into fall now and temps.gonna go down.

Do you think I can keep temperatures at 29c or 85f without going over with just exhaust

Or will I need AC

Just FYI, the HPS will put out more than 3.4 BTU/hr. The math on a 1kW HPS is around 4500 - 5000 BTU/hr and a DE HPS is usually mathed at 6000 BTU/hr for building design purposes. I have rooms with 10kW of HPS lights, some DE and SE... Those rooms have 4 ton AC units that are pushed to the limits. So I suspect the HPS number is somewhere around 4.8 BTU/hr per watt.

My math says that your tent needs around 1200 CFM to keep it's temps within 3 degrees of the ambient. Thing is, the ambient may just keep rising as the tent warms up the basement.

Only way to find out if your setup will stay cool is to fire it up without plants for 24 hours and see if it holds temp. It takes that long because stuff will gradually heat up. A test fire is always smart on a new grow.

Will leave me a bit short of 12. I've already spent 4200-4500 on this setup with everything involved.

Basically got money left over for a 70 pint dehumidifier or a 10,000 btu AC. But not both.......or momma gonna lose her mind

Hmm, tough choice. I would go with the AC and vent for humidity when the lights are off. But I do live where the ambient humidity is really low lol.

Get the dehumidifier and take a light out if you have to. Oh and the above guy is wrong 3.14 btu per watt is the heat it's not an opinion thing it's science... He's basically telling you 1+1=3

Before you buy anything else do a test run. See if your temps and humidity holds with just the fans you have now. If they do then great you don’t need anything more. If the temps hold but the humidity doesn’t then get a dehumidifier. If temps don’t hold then get an AC. Get what I’m saying? Problem is an AC can cause humidity fluctuations as well. So then you would have to readjust after getting an AC. But i would put lower humidity first Imo preventing mold, fungus and insect breeding problems. Also high humidity could lead to overwatering issues.

if your temps are a little higher your plants will probably hold if it’s not outrageous, you’ll just have to water more often

Yep you're correct 1W will always = 3.4121BTU. This is because the BTU is just a different unit of measurement describing energy. Watts are energy divided by time, the same as BTU/hr is energy divided by time. It's like how kmh and mph measure the same thing but have different units.


The number of BTUs/hr in 1W is supposedly 3.4121. Let's test this out on a 100W light and assume 100% of its wattage is instantaneously expelled as heat...

1W = 1Joule/1sec
100W = 100J/sec
(60sec/min) × (60min/hr) = 3,600sec/hr
(100J/sec) × (3,600sec/hr)
=
360,000J/hr for a 100W

1W = 3.4121BTU/hr
100W × 3.4121BTU/hr
=
341.21BTU/hr for a 100W

Now in order for these 2 measurements to be equal there must be some sort of conversion factor between BTU and Joules. In order to find what that is, we'd set them equal to each other (because remember they are equal, both are quantities of energy describing 100W heat, they're just in different units, like kph & mph).

341.21BTU/hr × (some conversion factor)
=
360,000J/hr

Divide both sides by 341BTU/hr to get the conversion factor isolated...

Back to your question, when will you need an AC. You've 6,885BTU of energy needing to be removed every hr you run (honestly it's probably at least 5% more BTU/hr due to the HID ballasts not being added in, they consume extra watts ontop of the light; 7,229BTU/hr). You can do that with plain exhaust fans but you'd have to transfer the energy being consumed by the lights into the air first so that the exhaust fans could remove the energy when exhausting the air. You'd do this with ossilating fans, actively cooled heatsinks, pulling air across the heat generating elements quickly or some combo of the 3.

Id use cool tubes for the (2) HID and exhaust outside (not in grow room), and then I'd add 1 more 6in exhaust for the ambient air. I think if you vented outside you'd be good.

-So I replaced with a 480 watt qb and a 315 watt cmh

I have one tall 16" oscillating
And 3 x 6" clip ons so transfering heat shouldnt be a problem

My 2x6" inline fans do exhaust outside. my innlines sit in the two holes at the top of tent and only have 6 feet of ducting straight out a window. the ducting is shaped like an s but it's not accordion ducting its.the expensive.smooth shit with almost no ridges
-No carbon filters

I can hook up the 4" to get me by in the meantime

I'm nearing my limit for how many watts or amps I can put on these circuits. Well to keep them under 80% so I guess it would have to be one or the other when it comes to ac or dehumidifier.

There is such things as a 10000 btu AC and 60pint dehumidifier rolled into one unit. They draw 600 watts and use like 12 amps.

I guess I could always run an extention cord from the garage or something tie into another circuit.

I originally started in a 3x3 tent 2 months ago and just kept on buying shit.

Plan was after this grow get.an electrician to upgrade my.wiring downstairs and also run some 8" vents from my rafters outside instead.of using my window. It was only a temporary solution.

I wouldn't say I was necessarily prepared for everything but as u can tell by my questions I understand the immediate importance of humidty and temperature.

Hows the humidity where you are? If the bigger concern is heat I would lose the 600hps and get another hlg when you run the hps in the same room as led you can't get the temps perfect because the hps puts out IR

In the winter time its about 30% rh. Very dry.
In the summer it's about 30-40% but we've had rain for the last 2 months which is unusual.and hunidities been about 50-60%
I'm in Alberta canada

Plants still have about a month of veg left. They stopped drinking because stressed out by cobs too close and got overwaterd so been slowly nursing them back to health.
I agree with you on the hps part it was given to me free with a brand new super max bulb it's the only reason why I used it.

Yeah nothing wrong with using it but the money's probably better spent on lighting vs a/c. Sounds like you probably don't need a dehumidifier that's well within vpd you might even need a humidifier

With your current rate of exhaustion you're cycling you're entire tent every 39 seconds.

After reviewing your post, an 8x8x7 (assuming its 7ft tall) is 448ft^3. Assuming your 6in fans are 396cfm, maybe 350cfm due to S, thats a total exhaust rate of ~700cfm.

700cfm ÷ 448ft3
=
1.56 times per min.

With your current rate of exhaustion you're cycling you're entire tent every 39 seconds.

Haha nice I was just throwing a guess, mine were exactly 396cfm (at least what manufctr said) and I thought I'd look like a real whiz if I seemed to call some arbitrary number out and have it actually be right lol so I took the leap. I looked at vivo but I ended up going with the eBay special, some Chinese no name with red blades.

I didn't even think about the 4in, so it looks like you'll be that much better off, seems like you get it so I'll step off my soap box lol

Yeah mate from the humidity levels you gave it sounds like you have no need for a dehumidifier at all. My humidity levels can hit a consistent 70% right now without one so I definitely need one.

Another note is it sounds like you’re trying to do too much with the lighting. Your tent isn’t super large. Simplify your lighting, probably sell the HPS and go all LED with lower heat output. It sounds like you’re throwing a huge amount of money into a tent when you shouldn’t be.

The key is efficiency. Don’t overthink the lighting because lighting can be maxed out for a certain contained area. Figure out what that max is and then budget your lighting from there. You need efficient lighting with lower heat output which will help with exhaust and temp issues. Put your money into GOOD main equipment. You don’t have to have overly expensive venting etc...but you should invest in good lighting and good fans. The vivosun are ok but there are better out there with better features which aren’t too expensive and might help you more.

my light works awesome for me because it has built in options and a built in timer.

The exhaust fan is awesome because it comes with a temp/humidity probe which you put in the tent and it detects whatever levels you set and can turn the fan on automatically. So I have mine set so if my humidity gets to 55% humidity or above 78% the exhaust turns on. Which is good because since temps and humidity fluctuates anyways it never keeps stale air in there for long.

just don’t overdo it man. Get a solid grow going for now. Grow some good bud. Then do what you gotta do with your grow and take whatever money you make off of it and reinvest back into your equipment. Don’t let it eat you up all at once. It’s an investment. But unless you’re doing full scale rooms and not a tent it shouldn’t be anywhere near $4000 invested. And people still do full rooms for much less. I’ve probably spent around $1000 or so including everything for my 2x4 small tent but I’ve got some really good equipment also. And a lot of the stuff like nutes, sprays etc etc will last a few grows.

also right now my tent has negative pressure due to the exhaust being way more powerful than the intake which is fine because negative pressure doesn’t hurt, and the intake is only meant for fresh air, not so much for cooling.

the Cloudline series fans are so good tho that as soon as I finish this grow and make some money back, I will be getting another one to use as my intake. And what’s awesome is you can daisy chain and automate them both from the same controller.

Are you growing soil or hydro?

Yeah like I said i was onlly planning on running 4 plants..my.sister gave me a 3x3 tent and that 600 watt hps so really just needed a 4" exhaust fan.

-then didnt like the heat from metal halide and was looking at dudes.growing 2.2 lbs with those optic 6s (cob and blurple)

-so i said to myself want that but I'll get a chinese version so dropped 530 on that (canadian)

-and I had bought an 8x8 tent 3 years ago and just never.got around to it so I was likee fuck I got that 8x8

-Thats when I started thinking bigger
So bought enough lighting to fill an 8x8
-2 fans for exhaust
-10 seeds from ILGM of a high yielding strain called chronic widdow which ran me.about 200 shipped
-organic hotsoil (living soil) shipped from toronto in a huge bail 60 bucks for the bail 50, bucks for shipping
-270 reverse osmosis system for my soil
-no nutes

And the rest just kind of writes itself.
Fans and timers and hangers and all that jazz just kept adding to the price.

This was never my original plan my friend haha

Once I get into a hobby.i drop stupid amounts of money.

Knew nothing about car audio 5 years ago then I built a ten thousand dollar system that will make.you throw up and I'm a 33 year old family man with a son. Cant even enjoy it.

So bought enough lighting to fill an 8x8
-2 fans for exhaust
-10 seeds from ILGM of a high yielding strain called chronic widdow which ran me.about 200 shipped
-organic hotsoil (living soil) shipped from toronto in a huge bail 60 bucks for the bail 50, bucks for shipping
-270 reverse osmosis system for my soil
-no nutes

And the rest just kind of writes itself.
Fans and timers and hangers and all that jazz just kept adding to the price.

This was never my original plan my friend haha

Once I get into a hobby.i drop stupid amounts of money.

Knew nothing about car audio 5 years ago then I built a ten thousand dollar system that will make.you throw up and I'm a 33 year old family man with a son. Cant even enjoy it.

haha. Trust me man ive been there done that with the overdoing it phase and I’m younger than you so I get it. But theres only sooo good you can get with your grow at first. What makes your bud amazing with high yield simply comes from the experience first and equipment second.

but yeah you don’t need a humidifier from the sounds of it. You may not even need an AC. I would just sell that light and get another solid LED. It doesn’t have to be a quantum or anything crazy. Just get something like I got off amazon maybe. Those are solid lights and I’m sure you already know to go by the true wall wattage and not the title wattage lol. Mine says 2000w but is 380W wall draw. I didn’t want to overheat my tent. But after this grow I’ll probably swap if for the 3000w/615 actual draw

Yeah I gotta do something. I'm only running that 600watt ballast on 75% so around 400 watts right now not even full power and dont even have the HPS in there yet.

Even this one ive only been running those 6 cobs, havent even turned on the other 300 watts of blurple yet so I definately will run into some heat issue when everything full power.

I'm gonna swap out that 600 watt hid for another light

I'm gonna swap out that 600 watt hid for another 315 watt cmh. I think 259.00cad easier to hide from momma than another qb
like I said man simplify it. I wouldn’t go mixing all these different lighting types because you’re probably just gonna end HK switching time all LED later on anyways. I would just use the 2 led you have now and maybe grow on like half side of the tent. Or sell that HID and just go LED like your other two but I wouldn’t mix CMH in there because you’re gonna make it more difficult for yourself having to buy different bulbs and components etc. You can get another solid SMD LED light.

but before you do anything book up your cob and your blurple for a day or so and check your temps with your current setup.
