Question on covering a sip

Is there a reason that they should be lose? Should he try to cover the small hole with something, I plan on doing something similar with the lid.
I was thinking just for some gas exchange and just to avoid any mishaps should you need to move the lid at all during the grow, unsnapping those things can get a little forceful lol. but by all means, snap it down if you wish :)

I'm new to sips, too. I guess I should ask if there are any pros or cons to even using a lid.

you must use a lid in order to maintain the moisture of your upper soil horizon. the lid inhibits evaporation of water and forms condensation on the underside, which drips back down into the soil, carrying oxygen with it!
Wow, thank you.

The cover or mulch is very important, if u work in sip maybe u will grow true organic (no bottle nutrients) ? So if u are growing organic the cover is something u can't skip because you are interested in micro life and micro life need dark and shady and moist place for thrive.

Thank you for the link.
I do plan on doing organic with no nutes in these sips.

The last video that I watched with Alan Adkisson was talking about frogs living in his pots. So, I imagine that it is not an air tight seal for the cover. He just didn't explain everything in his videos.

Saw that green dudes sips and hes got grokashi on the top and using em 1 for bottom feed. If you cover the sip does that mean you need to do anaerobic? Thinking of trying great lakes water only soil in an anaerobic sip like that

I'd cut a slit to the edge to make removal easier.
Yeah I was gonna say once the plants mature that lid is going to locked between your branches and the pot...feel like you'd definitely rather have a cover that can wrap around and be removed

Can I use straw on the soil? Does it have to be something like a bag or a cover?
you can really use whatever you want but I have seen some AMAZING results with a layer of bokashi on top and will be trying that next up covered in straw ( I use just straw on my all organic SIPs now) Come on over to the SIP thread and join up!

I will definitely check out the SIP thread.

I mixed hay into the top few inches, and topped with it.
then I covered it. I'm going to cut an X slit for the plant.
Should I poke holes all over it so that it can breath a little better?
Should I rip it off?
Thanks.

Nice clean set up, bud..

I think the X slit will be fine for now. Or loose, but still darkened. If you want to feed the fungals, now would be prime time.. BSF Insect frass and hard red wheat grokashi, being some of my fav choices so far, but even organic oats, ground into flour, sprinkled on, will help get the fungi party started. Just got 9/10 97 Bluemoonshines to pop, in pure castings, big up, and bless up!
