RDWC setup

Hey guys I finnaly got the space and time to start this up. Phase 1 planning. I posted a picture of a rough sketch of my plan. For anyone who can’t decipher my chicken scratch I have 3 55 gallon hpx containers. 2 inch return to my res that will be outside the tent. With a 1 inch flexible line going from the bottom of my res to the waterfall sprayers that feed into the top of my plant containers.

I also plan on cutting the bottom of my tent and building a frame to eliminate the height of my containers in the grow space.

I’m open for any input, thanks for your time.

Use less pipe and plumb it inside the tent to right out the side, rather than out and all the way around.
Thanks for the tip. Since I’m creating the platform I guess I can just plumb it under the tent which would eliminate most of the plumbing.

Oh what!?!?! You're gonna have the tent up off the ground?! Then you need to add drains that you can open up from the edge of the tent that go down under the totes. That's something ive seen done on IG that I thought was so bad ass.

Just use a tee and an elbow fitting and plumb a 1" line that comes right in the middle of the totes and out to the edge to a ball valve. Easy system water changes.

I think you need to check your measurements again, because the 55-gallon totes are too big to fit in a 4x4. What you're going to want to use is the HDX, 27-gallon totes. This is a very common setup (because it works really well), and is how I've got mine. With my setup, I have my controller reservoir outside the tent. There are lots of benefits to this setup.

If you want to see how it looks, check out my 2017 Grow Thread (link below), and jump to page 30. Lots of pics and descriptions!

Inside the tent, 2x27-gallon hdx totes (lids painted with primer to block the massive amount of light that bleeds through the yellow lids), 2-inch pipes, 3/4" return hose.

Oh yeah, and DON'T raise your totes. Way too much effort for little return. You'll have plenty of height left in the tent, especially if you train your plants, which will control their height. The trick is to take vertical growth and convert it into horizontal spread, to fill out a net and have numerous colas per plant at all the same height.

This is my 4x4 tent (standard 80-inch height), with three different strains, each of which grow to different heights in nature. The canopy is fairly level, allowing all the plants to get the same intensity of light at the top of the canopy and 10-12 inches below.

Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread. I just wanted to show you how much room I have left, at the end of the grow. You don't want to raise your tent. Trust me, it'd be a pain.

Did you have problem with draining your containers? That was one of the big advantages that i can think of for raising the tent/containers. The tent that I’m getting is 72” inches tall not 80.

Also what brand of ph and ppm reader do you use?

I also have the 27 gallon totes I thought they were bigger.

Should have all my parts here soon, will keep this post updated and hope people don’t mind questions.

You'll still have plenty of room with 72". All you have e to do is make a net, and use it to either hold the branches under it, or weave the branches through it.

I use the cheap pH and TDS pens you get on Amazon. Just look for the most popular meters. They'll be around $20 each.

The 27-gallon totes fit prefectly in a 4x4. The 55-gallon tote is around 52" or so.

Ask away, that's what we're here for :)

Found my feminized seeds still sealed from 2 years ago. No water damage and it’s been in pretty moderate temps. They should still be good right? Like I said they are also vac sealed.

Yep, should be fine. Seeds last a long, long time, if stored properly.

Cool thanks.

What’s the black flexible line called?. I can’t find it at my loacal HD
I use 3/4" black polyvinyl tubing. The only place I could find it was at my local hydro shop. I'm sure you could find some online, but not by the foot, like at the store. The barbed fittings seal tight, so you don't even need hose clamps.

BTW, when I mentioned making a screen and weaving the branches through it, that's known as a "scrog", which is short for "screen of green". If you're not familiar with this style of growing, it's well worth checking out. You can get much larger yields by maximizing the amount of horizontal space the light shines on. What you want is a full canopy, so that as little light as possible is lost.

Anyways, just do a search for "scrogging" if you're not familiar with it.

I’ve read everything on growweedeasy.com it was my go to for diagnosing plant problems and general info. They don’t have anything on the RDWC especially undercurrent. Thanks for being my resource man! I’m going to check Lowe’s by me they may have it. Going to start putting some stuff together this weekend. Hopefully some rest runs by tommorow.

I use my pump, and the valves, to drain the water to the outside of the house. A bit will remain in each of the totes due to the bulkheads/uniseals, but a wetvac will suck up the rest in seconds. Only difficult part is wheeling the wetvac outside to drain. When it gets full, it's pretty heavy. Depending on the wetvac container size, you might have to dump a couple times, but it's nothing.

Right on!

Post some pics as you go. The public with point out things you should adjust, or do differently,as you go.

Will do. I called my local hydro store and will be going there tommorow for the tubing. Guys pretty chill there and I’d rather support my local business than go to Lowe’s or HD. I’ll be back tonight with some pictures after dinner of the progress.
