Amount of dark time during flower

I had an issue over the weekend where i had to keep a flowering plant in darkness for 17 hours and noticed that the flowering progression looked better then when under a 12 / 12 cycle.

Has anyone done any tests to see what is the optimum amount of light during flower? Im wondering if we have the 12/12 standard due to 12 hours is the max amount of light before reverting plant back to veg. Im thinking of trying a shorter amount of light time during flower on my latest grow to test it myself but im hoping someone on the board has already played with this.

Any information you can pass on would be appreciated!

The plants start flowering because of longer nights, not shorter days.

i actually run 13/11 in my flower room, get an extra hour of growth each day, and they seem to flower just as quickly as they do under 12/12.
plants build up a hormone that sunlight destroys. so they're always making it, once they reach sexual maturity. the shorter days give the sun less time to destroy that hormone. once it builds up to a certain point, the plant starts to flower. giving them a day of complete darkness will make that happen a little quicker, but not sure it's worth the loss of a days growth to achieve, when they'll do it themselves, naturally, in another day or two

There's a few threads on growers using shorter light cycles during flower on here.

I run 11 on, 13 off during my bloom cycle (saves money/I'm cheap) and during the last two weeks, I knock it down to 8/16 to mimic fall lighting, which theoretically will produce more resin because it tells the plant that times up, your about too die.
I've tried a bunch, like 13/11, 12/12 and have found no real difference in quality or plant growth.

11 on and 13 off here but not all strains respond the same, some will under produce some it will make no difference. My last grow Ocean Grown Dark Plasma seemed to like it the G13 Labs c99 did not yield well at all ,small buds etc. So I say for general growing just run the 12/12. No guessing then.
