Hello everyone, thanks for stopping by.

I will be posting the progress of this grow to this thread so if you want to follow along, that'd be great. Feel free to post comments or questions, so long as it stays on topic with the grow. Ultimately, this journal is just a way for me to document things with the added bonus of maybe helping someone else out, as well as others helping me out.

Some backstory before I get down to the technical aspects of the grow. I initially had these plants in MG seedling starter mix. I noticed several different symptoms after several days indicating something was wrong (leaf disfigurement, yellowing, stunted growth). I had failed to test the pH of the soil before planting the germinated seeds. I did that, and the runoff was 4.7, and the slurry test was 4.7. I quickly got them transplanted to a better medium and the plants started to rebound within 24 hours. Needless to say, that shit took its toll, but they are recovering nicely. So that's why some of them look like they had a rough start. They did, and that's also why they aren't bigger for their age.

The Nitty Gritty:
-Five plants total; 2 feminized White Gold (White Widow x Himalaya Gold) and three regulars that were freebies that have The Church and DeadheadOG genetics (that will be interesting). One of the motivations behind this journal, is good luck finding a White Gold grow journal. There are plenty of great smoke reviews, but no grow journals. Also, The Church x DeadheadOG doesn't even have a name yet, lol. I suppose they were oops babies.

-1000w MH/HPS dimmable ballast

-Fox Farm Ocean Forest in 7 gallon fabric pots. One pound extra earthworm castings added to each, as well as 25-30% extra perlite.

-No added nutrients for now, but I am leaning towards the AN line. *** (Is it advisable to fertilize on top of FFOF soil for the first several weeks anyway?)

-Water comes from the tap at 7.5, pH'd down to 6.5. 100MG of Vitamin C is added to every 5 gallons of water to eliminate the chloramines. I haven't read any solid evidence that chloramines hurt a grow, but it's just so easy to add in 100mg of Vitamin C. Currently, I water about 16 ounces of water every two, two and a half days.

-Air temperature in-tent ranges from 73f to 81f (22.7c - 27.2c), depending on the time of day. Humidity stays right around 35-40. I would like it higher, but they seem to be quite happy as is. Ambient temperature (room the tent is in) is 70f. The tent temp. should improve once I upgrade to all 6 inch ducting and equipment soon, and add the equipment I have now as active intake.

-Running the ballast at 600 watts currently, 16 inches from plant tops. Running a moderate size air-cooled hood that vents outdoors. Will switch it over to 1000 when the time is right.

-I will be following "LBH's Famous ScrOG Tutorial" when the time comes. Two of these plants are on their fourth node, and I will be topping those two when the 5th node gets about 1/4-1/2 inch tall, then LST'ing all the branches down.

My goals: To learn as much as possible. Your first MJ grow is the best teacher one can have. You can read until your eyes bleed, but the real learning starts as soon as your hands get dirty. Interesting fact, I am OK with marijuana, but it makes me feel weird. Great around people I trust. Fun times to be had. But I am growing this out to be able to help my father. I know he used to smoke back before I was born. Now, he's come into some health problems and I want to help him feel better. With that said, I want to know that what he's smoking (if he even accepts) was cultivated with love and care. I'd be happy with a half pound. No real yield goals. It'd be nice to have more than that to give away as gifts, but I don't have many 420-friendly friends IRL. Something tells me I will if I start giving out cannabis LoL.

Alright, enough of the babble. Here are the first pics I'm going to start with for this journal.

Center: White Gold Feminized, bottom right, White Gold feminized. The rest are The Church x DeadheadOG

Some of them aren't as developed because I completely butchered the transplant. Thought the soil was loose on the bottom but it wasn't, and it just cut the roots right off. Like I said, first grow is the best teacher. I won't make that mistake again.

I'm seeing some super tight nodes. Some interesting growth to be observed on a few of the plants. I dare say mutation at this point due to the trauma they went through earlier on. This is two weeks from dry seed.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

So. Checked the kids tonight and noticed some explosive growth. I also noticed some weird splotches on one of the plants. I can't seem to find anything that matches up with any other diagnoses. Anybody seen this before, have an idea what it is? For reference, the last pic on my first post is the same plant 20 hours ago.

It's only on the new growth. Seems to be isolated to top two fan leaves.

Even with the spots, all your plants look nice! my plants could be here by now and we would be pretty close to growing at the same rate had i not drown them. It will still be fun comparing our grows!

Yeah bud. I'm going to be topping mine twice....and once your plants recover they're gonna take off. So you might even catch up! I plan on vegging a long time, too.

I want to give mainlining a try.. but i definitely wouldn't defoliate like i've seen. i have 600w total but spread out in 4 150w hps
with plenty of room but my lighting will cap my height and i don't know at what point. my goal is 3ft by the end of the grow.
how long are you vegging for?

That's some great coverage. 5x5 right? Should get good results from that. I won't be doing anything other than topping and lst and scrog this grow. But next grow I'll try my hand with some other techniques. As far as vegging goes...probably up to 2 months. It depends really. However long it takes to fill the 5x5 screen. I've got two feminized plants but the other 3 have yet to be determined. So. Worst case scenario I'll be vegging 2 plants until the screen fills. Best case 5 which wouldn't take as long.

Looking good so far

Dont knock defoliation till you try it with your particular strain

Some strains love it others dont.

I could not have done this without tons of defoliation at the right time :)

Just had a haircut last night probably the last one

no one is knocking defoliation :D as you said, some strains like it, others dont. I may try it on one or two to see how they respond. I'll definitely clean some of it out, just not sure how heavy I'll go.

I've just never mainlined before so I'm unsure and I personally think all of that defoliation looked scary! I love the end results I've seen, though, which is why I want to give it a go. I usually just tie back most of the fan leafs and I do take off the smaller bud sites and follow similar to a scrog/sog.

You defoliate more in bloom then veg anyway

Veg defoliation is more for shaping then anything
Mine where pretty full before bloom lol

So, I topped 2 of the plants tonight, one white gold and one church x deadheadog. They were at their 5th set. Plants are coming along nice. Haven't watered in 3 days, going to wait until tomorrow night to do that to ensure I'm not overwatering.

20180404_013954.jpg

Topped this one 20180404_014040.jpg

And this one. I wish I knew what those damn splotches were. Can't find anything. Doesn't have any other symptoms of tobacco mosaic virus, no other plants have it either. We'll wait and see, I guess. This is the only symmetrical plant out of the whole bunch, lol. A real odd family. 20180404_014054.jpg

Check this plant out. One of the leaves grew upside down, the other leaf has more leaves than it should. It's like it got teleported and put back together wrong on the other end :D I don't know how I'm going to go about topping this one cause she's growing all funky.
20180404_014110.jpg

If you look where I circled, that finger is apart of the fan leaf surrounding it, but it grew on it upside down. Lol. Freak.

I would check the bottomes of the leafs but i wouldnt worry much about the splotches unless they get worse

Is ot possibly dew droplets on the leafs?
Not possibly dew droplets. I've checked the undersides but couldn't see anything unusual. I don't have a loupe though, so I'm limited in that regard. I'll try to find a magnifying glass tomorrow.

Total newb here. You said you butchered the transplant: next time would you just plant your seedling right into the medium?

Absolutely. Next grow I am going to go right into their final pots. I will just water much less around the base and as time goes on water more and more. Good question. A lot of people will start their seedlings in another chamber so they require small pots at first. If you're going to be starting your grow in the same space as you are finishing them in, I don't see it as that big of a deal. I think it is suggested to start in smaller pots because people, beginners especially, have a tendency to overwater, which is easier to recover from in smaller pots. If you water correctly, larger pots from the get-go are fine.

Yeah... in some cases... it could, MAYBE even be better/more safe...... I stunted growth of some plants started off in solo cups because they wasn't enough drainage (my fault) but that wouldn't have happened in a large pot, I also use airpots. So the roots would have reached the bottom and been redirected, and there's no chance I would water them like I do in a small solo cups either, so it would most likely help with over watering and other problems, in my case.

It's all good. I picked up this today for the grow room. 80 bucks practically brand new. Goes for 220 brand new. 6000BTU. I've been having to run my central air to keep that one room down to 70f. Now I can take it down to 65 and save a ton on electricity at the same time. I want to install it right now but my tent is up against the only window in that room, and I need longer ducting to move it. Bonus: I don't have to listen to the misses complaining about how cold it is in the house anymore either lol.

nice!! definitely have to get a strain with some colors in it now that you have such control over the temp. Mosca Negra Seeds has a line of "pink" marijuana. they look pretty haha.

If growing seedlings in final spot/tent, where do I position my led 400w grow lights during seedling stage? I plan to plant them using a solo cup and root boosters. I’m thinking of using Fox Farm Ocean Forest with 1/3 perlite. Then transplanting them to 3 gallon smart pots with same medium. I have a 2x4x6 tent. Any advice? Thoughts?
