fridge, sealed in jars, covered from light, cold as you can without freezing the herb will preserve terpenes/potency as well as other smelly compounds like esters.
on the herb THC-a will mostly stay as such and not even convert to THC even after a long time at room temp sitting in the open but you will lose basically all your terpenes meaning shit herb, THC by itself is boring, different herb gives you different and powerful 'highs' because of the terpenes in addition with the THC and other cannabinoids..

In my limited experience, buds in glass jars with Bovedas kept in the dark start browning and getting a danker smell after about 12 - 18 months. It's still good smoke, but won't pass for new and fresh at that point. I usually use the 'older' buds for edibles. I'm curious if others have ways to store buds with vacuum bags and/or refrigeration that will keep bud good for longer.

you could try nitrogen packing it, forces all the reactive oxygen out of the container, replaces it with non reactive nitrogen gas. not at all sure where to get the equipment, but it's supposed to make stuff last as long as possible in the freezer. they also use it to store a lot of things like older paper and canvas, i.e. books, manuscripts, and paintings

Herb keeps well in the fridge for long term, retains its color and smell much better than keeping it at room temp. I use the jar sealing attachment on my foodsaver to seal mason jars for long term. The freezer will dry your herb out and make it crispy.

Most important thing is making sure your herb is properly dried before attempting to store long term. There should be no need to burp jars if you dried it correctly. mini hygrometer helps you find the ideal RH range.

I smoked some 2007 a few weeks ago at my buddies. Still very good. He dries down to a level that the buds can be destemmed in a sieve. Crumbled bud is then packed in a container so that the buds displace most of the air in the jar.

I'm playing with vacuum sealed jars now but I think it would be better to displace o2 with nitro before sealing. For a 6 month storage, just regular mason jar is fine, no need to do anything special.

Exactly....I have mine in zip locks inside boxes in a dark room .....it stays fine 10+ months no issues. I crop my greenhouses once a year..... sometimes I have a bit extra from the year before that's perfectly fine still....just inside large zip lock bags.

IMO 6 months the cure is just getting good good ....lol
