This is my first grow. I am allowed only twelve plants so my plan was to grow monsters and try to yield as much as possible on each tree. I am growing three strains, each with their own 4 pot RDWC system under ChilLed Tech 1000w commercial grow lights. I started from seeds about four weeks ago so I think I am already a little behind with training. My question is, is there any particular training/pruning method that makes the most sense for large trees? I had planned on using double layer scrog screens. I figured I should ask before I start topping because I really, really don't want to screw this up!
Thanks for taking the time.
I would stay away from tall trees unless growing with vertical hps and multiple bulbs.
You have some great lights there, will look forward to seeing the ChilLED lights in action as we don't see so many of them on here.
But that said the light will still diminish the further you are from the source. To light up a 7ft plant well at the top without bleaching or burning your gona see a drastic drop off below 4ft.
You don't have to grow tall to make the most of single plants. Top early, get 4/6/8 colas and then supper crop them to make them horizontal, keep them that way by supports or staking them ( across the branches) then allow the flower sites to grow up. Then your going to have a monster plant but with most of it at an even level receiving an even amount of light from above and thus getting roughly even sized colas and buds across the whole thing.
You could also consider LSTing them early to create a bush, still lower profile and the penetration of your lights will be made the most of.
To me what your planning as of now is the least economical and productive method of growing and would be a waste of such great lighting and plant count.
