Fishing

It was a gorgeous fish :)
Thank you I agree. I can also say there is no greater sportfish then an Atlantic salmon.
Sadly they are pretty much extinct from Nova Scotia nowadays. Even sadder is I have watched it happen in a mere 25 years.
I still tie flies but rarely fly fish anymore other then for the brooktrout I stocked in my pond.
Still hard to believe what has been allowed to happen to the once great rivers of this province.
Cheers :)

Come West & try our King Salmon in Alaska - they have quite the attitude and the brawn to back it up, but you better do it quick. If the Pebble mine gets off the drawing board and into Bristol bay my money says it will kill the salmon industry if (actually when) there is a spill from the mega-million gallon containment ponds they'll create.

This guy was by catch while fishing for Silver Salmon - 101 Lbs.

I honestly would love to. I did enjoy the salmon fishing in BC, but just something about a 30LB fish taking a dry fly, running you into 200 yds of backing, and being able to jump feet in the air doing it. From a fly fishing stand point nothing has come close.
I lived in Dawson Creek BC for over a year and have been kicking myself in the ass for not following that highway lol
Woulda prob never left . Alaska is and always has been a dream trip of mine.
Cheers and congrats on that monster spring :)

I'm a fly fisherman as well - tie most all my flys & have even built somewhere around 30 rods for myself, family & friends.
I lived down south for many years & have put multitudes of Snook, Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Shark, Tripletail (and the list goes on) in the boat with the fly. My favorite by far is the Tarpon though - their runs and aerial acrobatics are heart stopping.

Years ago I use to guide a guy from Florida here for salmon. He always talked about the bonefish and tarpon fishing. Even invited me down a few times. Never did go and he has since passed.
The stories of his about the telephone pole shadows he hunted lol
Cheers :)

Years ago when the Fenwick HMG was the hot stick I built an 11wt 9ft, added a
Fin-Nor reel & proceeded to set an IGFA world record (after many, many attempts).
It stood for 5 years or so before someone beat it - but I still have the Certificate around here somewhere.

WOW very impressive my friend!!
Only record I hold is the youngest registered guide at 15 lol
I was a fenwick user for many years other then one 6 wt TFO lefty series. Incredible rod. Have landed fresh steelhead upto 28 lbs on it lol and I do have a love for St Croix. All the years I have fished and guided I have never dropped more then $300 on a rod. Never owned Sage, Orvis, Gloomis, or any of the highend rods.
I would love to one day build a rod or two. There is a guy on here whos profile picture is a beautiful center pin reel green and silver with weed leaves on it haha
Cheers and congrats to now both monsters :)

I can say The fella I referred to before from Florida, loaned me a 10 weight Gloomis with his tarpon shooting head that I spooled onto my systemII at the time. I was 16 and had broken my rod in his truck door lol In fact it is the rod laying in the water in the picture I shared here lmao Hilarious
But ya that shooting head tarpon rod and line was insane. I could double haul 30-40ft into my backing NP haha
Cheers :)

Running a "system" line like the Shooting head/running line takes some practice.
That's what i was running on the HMG & could easily throw the head + all the running line (provided it didn't "asshole" up on me on the way out).

Some of the new lines are actually "bumpy" (particularly the Tarpon series but I don't remember the brand) and they rattle like hell through the guides on the cast, but the friction reduction lets you cast them quite a bit farther than a conventional line.

I haven't had my fly rods and fly tying kit out in 8 years but reading these last few posts had me think it may be time to limber them back up.

I still find tying flies quite therapeutic. I also enjoy giving them away to people. There is an organization called healing waters. It is for veterans . I believe they are in both the states and Canada. Nice place to donate some flies or other fishing gear to.
Cheers :)
