I'm doing this, with one air stone in each bucket.

The way you have that set is fine with one stone. If you can ford to upgrade at some point I would recommend this pump. It creates lots of air

i could just add diluted nute mix to my current res to increase it right? im thinking of adding 1 gallon so it will be 4 gallons total. im concerned about my hydroton floating out of the top of my netpot, is this a reasonable concern? lol
also, is 4 gallons a suitable container and my pump good enough for two 4 inch cylinder air stones?

I wouldn worry about adding any water till next change.
