Coco grow problems...

Hey guys. Im a new memeber to the site, but have been a long time reader. This is my first serious grow and things have been going well until about a week ago. Ill break down my grow room for you guys. I have a 4x4 grow tent, started using a 400w mh bulb and switched to my 750w hps about a week ago. Im growing in 3gal smart pots and am using a auto strain due to the fact i figured it would be more user friendly. The nutes im using are canna A/B and just recently started to add canna boost once i noticed one of my plants developing some pre buds. My lights are on 18/6 but i have to move them to 12/12 due to one auto not transisioning. I developed some claws on my plants and thought it was due to over watering so i let them dry out and it never fixed the problem so i flushed lastnight and my run off was at 100ppm. Im wondering if i need to use cal mag and maybe thats whats happening? Im feeding with tap water so im not sure. I really dont want to have their growth stunned any longer so any help would be awesome! Thanks

Also, my first signs of the problems were when i changed my light from 400w to 750w and also i removed some lower leaves and then watered at the same time. Maybe that is it? Old growth seems to be normal and the top growth is where most of the problem is. One leaf on that right plant has turned yellow within a day or so since the flush.

Exactly what happened to me last few days mate, had a power cut blew my 400watt hps bulb and they were in the dark for a good 4-5 hours, stuck a 250watt CFL light in just till my new bulb arrived, asked about on this as they were drooping and clawing, ended up being a change in light, did you swap from the light the same time you changed the light cycle ? If so like I was told there probs a bit confused and just use to a different light, only and idea like, if I was you I'd go back to how you were see if they recover :)

Thanks for the reply pineapple! Yeah i hear ya there have been a few days where the temps have swung a bit for me. Weather has been crazy here between night and day! I havnt switched the actual cycle yet i just changed the light out becuase it was getting cool at night and the 750 was helping a lot with that. I was kinda waiting for them to recover before i forced the auto that isnt flowering into flower. Did you notice your plants perked up once you went back?

Yeah mate I see what you mean I was just thinking your temps should have been okay but I'd deffo say it's because youve changed your light, mine were proper starting to droop and claw with the CFL I was getting so pissed off waiting for my new bulbs to come, that night I got my hps back and running they perked up a bit that night the next day they were completely back to normal, all I can say mate is maybe get your normal light back in there and maybe stick a heater or something in there if it gets a little cold, probs just confused with a different light and slowed down the growth like mine did, hope this helps :bigjoint:

Awesome my lights are about to kick on, ill swap em back out and see what happens. I was really hoping to get to use my 750w but if it is gonna compromise my grow i can settle! Lol

Could be the increase in light intensity or just the change in spectrum. Cant tell from the pics if its light burn.

But I wouldn't be surprised if you had some salt build up in there too looking at the lower leafs. But again hard to tell without close ups.

How much are you feeding them and are you allowing a good amount of run off?

Edit, actually the lower leaves are probably due to the flush, did you add more nutrients after you flushed?

Thanks corey. When i switched from solo cups to my 3g smart pots inwas having trouble getting a watering system down so i feed them based on how heavy they feel when lifted slightly. As far as nutes i feed them 3/4 tsp of A+B each and then half tsp of the boost every gallon with run off i get a decent amount but Sometimes none if i dont have enough nutes made up but still give it a good watering. It usually pans out to be every 3 days and no i never added nutes to them after i flushed. Should i? Or wait til they need watering again? I didnt wanna over water.
I switched out the light already and this is what they look like at the moment. Should i go back to the dimable 750w and just turn it down or do i have a different issue here?

I glanced through the thread but didn't see anywhere that said you raised the lights once the intensity got raised from 400w-750w? This is likely your issue, if the 750w light is in the same height as the 400w light then that is likely what your issue is. Interesting thing about light burn is that you'll notice symptoms of nutrient deficiency that is actually related to your light being too close. When light burn happens, most people think it's a nitrogen deficiency or even toxicity because you start getting "the claw" and leaves start to yellow on you. However, it is only a nitrogen issue if it starts from the bottom of the plant and works it's way upward.

From what I can see in all of the photos you've provided most of the symptoms appear on the upper half of the plant as opposed to the bottom. Deficiencies of macro nutrients tend to start from the bottom and work their way upward, however if you take a look at all of the pictures you posted you'll notice most of your symptoms are at the top of the plant which tells me the issue is your light being too close. The fact that this wasn't an issue before you upgraded your light confirms this for me.

I keep my 600w lights around 24 inches above the canopy, give or take. I found this one out the hard way, but you can have light burn even if your canopy temps are a perfect 75-77 degrees. While the actual heat coming from the light won't cause you issues if your temps are where they should be, it's still very much possible to give your plant too much light. I've seen a lot of new LED growers have this issue, they figure since the lights are so much cooler they can be placed closer to the plants as a result.. however they still end up getting light burned despite the temps being where they should be.

Fortunately you have a couple of options as to how to fix this. The best move would to just raise the lights so you can make full use of all 750 watts during flower.. however I notice you're in a tent and it may not be possible for you to raise the lights up any more. If you're unable to raise the lights then grab yourself a dimmable ballast and run it at 50-75%, whichever setting works best for you. After you've fixed the issue with the lights make yourself a foliar feed of silica and kelp meal as that will help with the stress.

The main thing to consider here too is that you're using coco, and it's pretty rare to experience over/under watering with coco. The pots even look like they've been watered recently, yet they are still drooping which tells me the issue is likely light burn and not anything related to watering and/or nutrients.

Awesome! Thanks kratos. I did raise my light however it may have been too low still. I will let them cure under the 400w and then hopfully switch to ky 750w later in the week at 50% and work my way up. Apreciate all the input guys. Hopfully it solves the issue and i can continue to be a happy grower!

Unless you require a ton of weight you'll more than likely end up a very happy grower indeed! With the genetics these seed banks are putting out it's pretty darn easy to grow yourself some quality buds, getting huge yields is where the challenge is. For what it's worth, things are looking pretty good with the exception of the light issue. Wishing you the best!

@Cocogrower420 kratos015 pretty much said it all.

But to answer your question on nutes after flush, Yes in coco if you flush you want to reintroduce nutrients straight away. Otherwise you just washed them out and the plant will feed on itself pretty quickly with coco been almost inert.
Don't worry about overwatering in that situation.
