Oregon Diesel Outdoor Grow - Pacific Northwest

Good morning everyone -

This is my first post in any forum for growing cannabis. I recently retired from the military and wanted to get back into the hobby I loved so much before joining the armed forces. I only grew indoors in the mid 90's - a lot has changed.

I grew up in Southern California and now, I retired up here in the Pacific Northwest - much different conditions growing outdoors.

I started out growing 4 Bruce Banner #3's, bad decision - that's all the clones I had on hand when I started. I was constantly training them, pruning - it didn't matter, they were soon 8' bushes and I could tell they would not make it to harvest, so I pulled them. I know, I could have built a little hoop house, etc. - I was lazy and I wanted the backyard to look nice for the wife.

Ok, enough of that... I was able to pick up 4 Oregon Diesel clones. I hardened them off for two weeks and planted them on the 15th of June, planting earlier could have had them start flowering before you wanted them to. I used 35 gallon containers, 33 gallons of KIS organics soil with char in each container, I watered enough to keep the super soil moist on the top (watered every other day), now that they are in full flower and the weather has been hot, they want water everyday. The weather hasn't been that great up here this summer, more rain than the past couple of summers, but lately... The weather has been blazing hot and the plants seem to love it. I have my plants facing south. They receive sun from 8 am till about 2:15 pm, and then big trees shade the plants from 2:30 till 6 pm, then they get a bit more direct evening sun, when its starts cooling down.

I have been using "Recharge", found out about the stuff on, "Dudes Grow Show", podcast. It's awesome stuff, I use it once a week. I also top dress using QUALITY earthworm castings every other week.

I think these plants will be ready by the 1st or 2nd week of September, they smell like berries and they have some purple, violet colors, awesome looking plant up close.

Please, let me know what you think - I have thick skin, any suggestions are appreciated.

Looks good, are they all the same strain? And did they all go outside at the same time? I ask cause the ones in the planters look really nice.

Yes, they were all planted at the same time. It's weird, one started budding one week before the other three. That same plant had a small bug problem in the beginning of the grow (looked like white aphids), handled the issue and I think the result is that it went into protection mode and started flowering earlier - ???

Additionally, the subject, Oregon Diesel plants are in the black 35 gallon containers.

Looks great! I grew one OD for my patient last winter indoors. She prefers Sativa-dominant cannabis, so it was a rare Indica dominant for us. Beautiful sweet smelling plants, I look forward to seeing yours finish!

Interesting... I had one plant that had a very "rough childhood", was put in a pot with bad soil, then transplanted, and for weeks just seemed to stay the same size and was very pale. It's made a full recovery, and while it did not flower earlier than the others, its very early bud/leaf formations are covered with frosty goodness! I have two others of that strain growing, and they are not showing any frostiness... so it might also be one of those reactions to adverse conditions. I'll take it.

No doubt, I'll take it too. Glad to hear you enjoyed the ODI.

Update 20 August 2016: It's been scorching outside these past few days - high 90's and today is going to be in the 100's. Yesterday was very windy near the Columbia Gorge, I had an emergency stake down session, took me a few hours. Check out the pics, my camera sucks by the way - my bad for the quality.

Found my biggest girl leaning over at about a 45º angle the other day. Sounds like we're in about the same area, I'm at "the gateway to the gorge", or so they call it.

Yep, we're in just about the same area... Always looking for good strains . Hope your ladies recovered!

Thanks. The only plant I'm running outside right now that is actually supposed to be both an early finisher and "disease resistant", is LSD (that's just "LSD", not an abbreviation for Lemon Sour Diesel). I'll let you know if it lives up to the claims.

Update 27AUG16: Ladies are looking good, starting to get a lot of yellowing leaves, pistils are starting to turn red/brown. Still have mostly clear triches 80% - 15% cloudy, 5% amber. Looks like we are going to get some rain later this week (Thursday, Friday and possibly Saturday). Decision time: (1) Put them in the garage while its raining, (2) build a cover for them, (3) Cut em down Wednesday evening. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That is amazing... I don't have any plants that far along. Those are not auto-flowers, and you didn't do any light deprivation? That is awesome that they are finishing so early.

I know this answer is probably not what you are looking for, but you could always do "all of the above". I don't recall how many you have, but -- cut some, garage some, cover some, and see what you get? I tend not to put all my eggs in one basket if I can help it.

Yeah, it's an interesting strain. It comes from a hermit male blue berry crossed w New York City Diesel. A lot of fun to watch grow. Since you're not too far away, I can give you a cut... Not sure how it does indoors, but it's worth keeping around till next years outdoor grow season. I think I'm going to put the girls in the garage while it rains and move them back out when it stops... They're so close to being perfectly ready haha

I don't know what will actually happen, because things rarely go as I "plan", but I am trying to set up to finish two in my garage. I won't be moving them in and out, they are too big. I would guess in about mid-September I'll get them in and put every light I have over them, and let them finish dry and wind free under 12 hours of artificial sun. Just hedging my bets, trying to make sure hell or high water something finishes.

What an awesome grow man. That Oregon Diesel looks to be the perfect strain for here. I've read about it and tried to find it earlier in the year...hard to come by. Not sure what the ODs resistance to PM is but I would at least cover them. Yours are beautiful and I would do everything in my power to take them to maturity. I have to build temp hoop houses over mine each fall to be able to finish. Looking forward to seeing your harvest.

Thanks slow drawl. I'm getting a boat cover w the frame. Taking out the canvas and replacing it w 6 mm UV clear plastic. I'm going to keep a mother plant of ODI around for next season - Hit me up if you're somewhat close to the Portland area for some cuts

That should work well for ya. Wow..thanks for the offer, just might take you up on that. Those of us that are close enough to meet up PDX area should get together after harvest and do some bud swapping just to have something different. I give a lot of weed away..

Sounds like a plan. I'm definitely into that. I give a lot of herb away also. I just retired from the military after 21 years (I'm not all Gung Ho - No Worries). Man, I tried puffing on a joint - I was done. Cannabis is wayyyy stronger now than in the 90's. Basically, I have to work my tolerance up a bit. Love doing yard work blazed though haha

My forecast in not for a lot of rain, but I'm down in the valley... If they move easily - I vote for the garage. Definitely up for a bud swap...
