Maybe I could make a filter sandwich from furnace filters and charcoal pellets

Cabinet
> Hepa Filter > Nordic Carbon Filter > Activated Charcoal Pellets > Nordic Carbon Filter > Activated Charcoal Pellets > Nordic Carbon Filter > Activated Charcoal Pellets
> 4" axial fan pulling air out

This would work similar to the race car style filters, those are reported to work well but require to be washed out every three weeks, which seems like a lot of upkeep.

Not a lot to report other than:

Parts are trickling in from eBay. Have about 1/3 of everything I ordered. I did end up ordering a bunch more than I originally posted, will provide a group picture of all the loot when it's all here.

Righty-o, I didn't notice before but Can Filter lists the max cfm rating for the different filters.

Can Filter 705: 13 cfm max
Can Filter 2600: 46 cfm max

The 705 is a lot smaller, I'd prefer that but I'm not sure if it would work as 13 cfm seems really low. My box is 10 cubic feet. Im wondering if an exchange of all the air in the box each minute would be enough to keep humidity down. Also at such a small rating would assume it wouldn't last that long.

Can Filter 705: 0.5kg Carbon
Can Filter 2600: 2.1kg Carbon

Decisions decisions. The small filter I could fit outside the box, the 2600 would have to go inside.

Edit: my drawing above shows the 2609 would fit outside, I'll have to double check that tomorrow when info pick up more h2o2 from the grow store.

The cup challenge is approaching fast! :grin: I don't have long to get this put together.

Ive been contemplating air flow. For the exhaust I think I'll stick with something similar to the design above using the can 2600. since this is going tightly in my closet I was having a challenge figuring out how to run the intake.

First I thought I'd just cut a hole in the side but then I saw it will be too tight along the sides, then had a great idea: cut two holes in the back and glue a pvc pipe flush through the case. That way I can pull air straight through but here's the better part; I can connect more pvc and route the intake from anywhere - and then it hit me. I'll pipe the intake pvc to another box that I'll keep my mother plants in, and use one filter for two boxes!

So on the hunt today I went looking for a Mother of a computer case - and locked down this beast of a computer for free!

This is gonna sit on top of the other box I think.

Most of it is emptied and vacuumed. I'll need to really clean it up and remove those middle support frame pieces somehow, no idea how I'm going to cut them out.

Salvaged at least three axial fans out of it too, that one on the right looks like a beast (for a PC fan).

Let's play strip the case. I won!

So I was bummed out that most of the metal was riveted together and I don't have a dremel or metal cutter. I looked online though and found out that it's super easy to remove a rivet, just drill through it with a metal drill bit!

Easy!

I checked out the can 2600 and it looks like it will fit so I'll go that route. Im thinking about pushing air through the filter which makes it easier to mount, but I'm not settled on that yet.

I also am thinking if two 1inch pvc pipes will not be enough airflow and will stress out the exhaust fan. To control smell I want to see if I can avoid an intake fan and just use and exhaust fan to pull air through the whole system. I did something similar with an inline s&p silent fan, but that was a pretty nice fan.

I have a soler palau fan venting my 36" x 16" x 32" cab. I originally had a 4in passive intake with that 4in fan but it was still a little too hot.. so I made a louver. It works great and blocks light 100%. Thinking about it in your situation though it might be hard to cut out a fat 5" square to mount it.

That's a nice light trap design!

I could definitely do that for the box if it was stand alone, I think I will keep the idea of routing the airflow through the pc case and build something like your light trap for the pc case.

I know for a fact that a SP can pull air through multiple cabinets.. These little 4" fans however yeah I'm not sure.

I guess... If I really have to (don't want to) I could build a filter box and set it on of the cabinet.

That light trap is awesome! So small and effective.

So the s&p for my small current setup would be overkill I think size wise... I think the cfm might also be too much for the filter I have selected too.

I did however just find this interesting page that explains how to run centrifugal and axial fans in parallel and series for increased pressure and flow.

Running fans in series (to increase static pressure ventilation capacity) "If axial fans or inline fans are being considered (for running fans in series) select each fan for the flow rate required and one-half of the system total pressure requirements"


So maybe I'll double up on axial fans.

I was wondering if putting two fans against each other would work, and the answer is yes, as long as they are rated with the same flow and static pressure rating

Wow that's crazy. I was tabbed out looking for fans for the new cabs I'm building... Thought that the s&p was overkill for the other cab so why spend all that on venting the new ones? So I picked up a 5 pack of 120mm fans for ~$20. Perfect that you looked that up for me :D I can use two stacks of two and have great results! Now just to figure out a nifty light trap for to set them up for exhaust...
