YO! — OK, SO HERE'S WHAT IS UP:

I'm keeping this grow journal for my own records as much as anything else, as this is my first grow. I've already gotten a TON of invaluable info from here, so I decided to participate. Although this is my first grow, I spent quite a bit of my youts with working at my grandma's nursery so I'm not totally green....ha pun not intended — in general I'm "pretty green". This grow is mostly outdoor [with some cloudy day and possible late season finishing w/ LED] and 100% organic. I'm growing vegetables the exact same way, and don't wanna smoke or eat any chemicals. The funny thing is, if I weren't growing the weed with my garden this summer, it wouldn't have been organic. Once I started getting deep into the grow info and learning about ferts — game changed.

WHAT WE'RE WORKIN WITH:

The plan is to do [1x] regular/fem plant [Swiss Cheese] and two seasons of [3x] auto/fems. I live in the PNW so I know two outdoor auto seasons is a little risky for a first grow here, but we were in the 80's for most of last October, so fingers crossed. I've got an decent [I think] LED grow light (goo.gl/oPZ4Vt) and a basement, so I can get a tent and finish the last guys indoor if needed.

R1:
  • Nirvana Swiss Cheese (15 gal. smart pot)
  • FastBuds Green Crack (15 gal smart pot)
  • FastBuds Fastberry (7 gal plastic)
  • Mephisto Genetics Sour Bubbly (5 gal pulp)

R2:
  • Nirvana Swiss Cheese cont. (15 gal smart pot)
  • FastBuds Six-Shooter (15 gal smart pot)
  • Royal Queen Northern Lights (7 gal plastic)
  • Seedsman Sour Diesel Haze (5 gal pulp)

*NOTE*
I had planned on growing two regular plants and two autos (hence the large pots on the biggest autos), but decided against it to try and keep my garden a little smaller for the sake of my neighbors. It will be legal here come July 1'st [about the time the first autos should be close to flower stage] and I know either way — especially the cheese — is gonna fuckin reek, but whatever. I want something I can play with a little bit, and hopefully build a manifold on.

I am also starting 4 plants from some mix seeds I got from a grower friend of mine for another friend of mine. He lives on quite a bit of land in the souther part of Oregon and will be planting them in the back of his property. The grower told me the couple of strains that were in there, but I cannot for the life of me recall. Anyway, remember being pretty excited so should be some good shit. Those have all sprouted [two of them popped one week ago, one popped five days ago and one popped yesterday] as well as the swiss cheese [popped her shell 2 days ago].

THE SETUP:
I am growing in my driveway, which goes all the way to the back yard, so it'll be behind a 4' fence. Today, May 27th, we got direct sun on the garden from about 6am until 6:30pm, so pretty much ideal conditions. I am also growing a pretty good sized herb/vegetable garden along with. It will include: [2x]large tomato plants, [6x] pepper plants (padron, fireball, poblano x 2, sweet choc. bell, heirloom banana), cucumbers (lemon, sour mex gerk), 4 pots of greens (kale/chard/spinach), herbs (pineapple sage, sage, purple sage, french lavender, english lavender, thyme, lemon thyme, basil, cilantro, italian parsley, {not all pictured, some in window boxes}), and last but not least, a giant pumpkin. It will also have 4 pots of sunflowers, and a few pots of wildflowers. It's not really a "cover garden" as my grow will be totally legal before any of the weed plants will be too big or smelly, but I a] want the least amount of people walking by to smell/see it and b] to fuck with my neighbors the least. I know thats asking a lot from a kitchen garden, but I would prob plant most of it anyway, and at least its better than nothing.

As far as weed plants go, I am testing out a few different methods/theories with the autos, along with manifold training the swiss cheese. This is all a big experiment for me, and I'm just trying to have fun and see which methods work best for later seasons in m climate. I've not yet landed on the exact combinations of transplanting/not, tiered pots, amounts of super soil, using the super soil just as a top dress, etc. yet, but by any means, it will all be well documented here.

Driveway garden as a baby...it will have to spread out quite a bit once the plants all start to fill out.

THE SOIL:
I'm currently a couple weeks into cooking a 1/3-1/4 batch of subcools supersoil, although slightly modified. I am using 4 cub. feet of Black Gold Organic for this round, which now I regret using over Roots. Leaning process shit...maybe. It still ended up being cheaper in the long run [since I got more soil out of it than two bags of Roots] to get a bag of Mykos and some kelp to make up for the root bacteria and potassium. So if it works well, we'll see. So far I have added Mykos, blood meal, bone meal, kelp meal, dolomite lime, azomite, worm castings, rock phosphate, bat guano, and some extra pearlite. I'm gonna use Roots as the top 1/2 - 2/3 in the pots, so I'm thinking it will all work out okay in the long run.

FARMING FRIDAY PT. 1

Lots happenin' in the past 24 hours! Sour Bubble cracked her shell after about 10 hours in a shot glass and 10 more in a wet paper towel. Had the warm weather on my side with that one. Now sitting under a incandescent, just for the heat overnight until she sprouts, then outside! I took the swiss in overnight for its first 2 or 3 nights, but its gonna be a little harder with the autos, as I've actually got a little hood that goes over that to block the light, but took it off for pic.

Screen Shot 2015-05-30 at 11.39.23 AM.png

So, the Mephisto Sour Bubbly is the first experiment that I am doing, which will be the ever feared "auto-transplant". She is the theoretical lowest yielder out of the bunch, with a 90g-200g potential yield, and going into the 5 gal pulp pot. I am testing out the three pot sizes and three different pot materials on my different autos, so see if any of it makes a difference, and to see if the "5 gallon is as big as you wanna go" claim is true. My guess is not — especially for outdoor — but we'll see. The transplant I am setting up is a combination of a few things I've seen people get good results out of. I am doing a 3" peat pot with the bottom 1/3 removed tiered in a 5" peat pot with the bottom 1/3 removed. That is all going in a full 5" peat pot. I also did a vertical cut on the bottomless 5" pot all the way, so the plan is to gently pull the top root mass with the 3" & top 5" out of the bottom 5", then unwrap the chopped 5" peat and just have root ball and 3" tier to plant into the 5 gal pulp pot. Fuck, even I'm confused. I tried to get everything I talked about in the pic, but it'll prob make more sense when I transplant. I will photo-document well.

//**As a side note — I have no idea how close these "potential yields" the breeders are giving out are, as well as no scale to which breeders are tellin' it straight up and who is full of shit. Fast Buds potentials seem crazy higher than most other autos, without breaking the 11/12 weeks "super-auto" classification, but maybe they're just fuckin' rad genetics. Anyway, I'm just using them a guide for pot size, and time will tell.**//

So, next up in big news — while I was at work today the rest of my seeds finally came!

ron-swanson-is-excited.gif

That makes it 5 days from Seedsman [who shipped my seeds literally hours after I placed the order due to time diff] for the first batch and 6 days from Herbies, not including the 4 or 5 days it took them to ship the order. Pretty impressed, both showed up a lot quicker than expected. I popped the green crack and fastberry [both from Fast Buds] into shot glasses at about 3 PM. I'm officially on summer work hours until labor day, so expect lots more farming friday action going on.

Screen Shot 2015-05-30 at 11.39.17 AM.png

In other news, I spread out the garden and did some re_arranging. I had everything clustered up so that the bag of lady bugs I had gotten to take care of anything that may have come from the nursery with them is long gone before the pot plants start to really veg. Anyway, they hung out for a few days and hopefully laid some eggs before they took off, everything seems pretty happy. I'm going to trim the hedge this weekend before the plants go in, so it doesn't get in the way later in the summer if anything really takes off. I'm gonna do at least mild LST on everything but the sour bub [I figure the transplant is enough for her] in this first round of autos, so I'm not too worried about controlling it if that does happen — but it needs a trim anyway.

Screen Shot 2015-05-30 at 11.39.30 AM.png

I also re_mixed the super soil, which is getting pretty fucking rank — thinking/hoping thats a good sign. I picked up a bag of roots on my way home from work and thought that made my car smell terrible....then while re_mixin the super it smelled like that bag of roots x 10 and I was strugglin'. It was in the mid-upper 80's here today, so that definitely didn't help. Didn't take any pictures of this, wasn't a pretty sight or too exciting. I did lots of sweating and driniking of beer. I love my job, and doing this was hard, hot, sweaty, and crazy stinky, but it was seriously about 10x times better than being at work this afternoon.

All the plants that have already sprouted seem to be doing fairly well. I feel like they should be going a little faster, but it was a little cooler/cloudy for the 5 or so days after they came out of the soil, so I'm not too worried. The four randos are going a few hours south in a few days and will end up going into the ground on my buddies property, so I want them to be on the tougher side. The swiss cheese on the other hand, I may start bringing in on nights at least till I transplant it — lemmie know if anybody has thoughts on this. Everybody has their second sets of leafs growing, except the "late bloomer" rando who I germinated at the same time as the swiss cheese, but didn't crack it's seed or pop through the soil nearly as fast.

Screen Shot 2015-05-30 at 11.39.35 AM.png Screen Shot 2015-05-30 at 11.39.41 AM.png Screen Shot 2015-05-30 at 11.39.46 AM.png

Been working on this project for a number of weeks now, doing research, getting supplies, making the soil, picking out seeds/waiting for them to arrive — it feels really good to finally be to the stage where things are happening. Thanks to everybody who is following along, so far its been one of the funnest things I've done in a long time.

yea buddy ! in for the ride ... love your enthusiasm
Subbed, good luck!
glad to have ya'll on board!

TODAYS UPDATE:
both fastbuds autos cracked their shells today [green crack & fastberry] and went into their soil. the fastberry in the 7gal plastic went into a double tier peat pot set up [3" & 5"] and the green crack went into a 5" peat pot tired into the 15 gal smart pot. i didn't realize they were gonna shoot roots today and randomly checked on them before I shut stuff down outside tonight —planted in the dusk...will have pics tomorrow. the sour bubbly hasn't come through the soil yet, back under the incandescent in the basement for the night, hopefully we'll see something in the am or tomorrow.

okay, so its supposed to rain medium to pretty hard on monday and tuesday. this is oregon after all, even though its feeling more and more like nor cal every day. theoretically we're gonna have some fresh dudes coming through the soil then, and a couple still pretty small guys who have come through in the past week/day or two. i have large car port i can put them under, I also have a UFO style 90w [400w power] LED grow light in the basement. The one issue there is, that the green crack is already planted into a 15 gal smart pot and i'd rather not move it down to the basement [although I can drag it without too much issue I think]. I also was thinking of making a couple little cling wrap tents to go over the plants with wrap and chop sticks. Anybody have any ideas/advice on this?

Thanks all!!!

YO — what the shit is up everybody?!?!

TODAYS UPDATE: FUCK'T WEATHER
[for the weed plants — everybody else in my garden seemed to LOVE the rain and get plenty of sun through the clouds]

Luckily enough its warmer than predicted, hovering in the mid 60's during the day and mid 50's at night. Cloudy as fuck though, and bi-polar style rain that pours for 3 minutes then sprinkles for 15 then does nothing for 15-30, repeat cycle. Here's what it looked like around 5:30 when I got home from work:

Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.25.19 PM.png

Not great, but could be worse. Also, FUCK THAT TREE — if it weren't for it, I'd get another hour or two hours of direct light in the garden. Anyway, I digress...

So — last we checked in, Sour Bubbly was still underground. It was epic perfect weather this weekend, blue sky and highs in the mid-upper 80's. She spent most of sunday slowly coming out of the soil outside under her clear plastic hood, and once the sun hit the big tree, I put her and the swiss cheese under the grow light for another couple hours to finish their 18 strong. I put a pint jar lid over the plastic hood of the baby, so she only got indirect light and the swiss cheese got direct. Have light on timer aligned with sunrise, and then going for 18 hours after that. When I came down this morning, HOLY SHIT!!! The SB first set of real leaves were all the way out and lookin' badass and literally the swiss cheese seemed to about double in size. She is now bigger than the biggest of the randos, which came through the soil over a week earlier. What I've learned from this, is that starting the 4 randos totally outside — leaving them outside for the night, letting them germ/sprout outside — def slowed out action down in initial growth. When it's nicer out I'll get better side by side pictures, you can kinda tell in the pictures coming next.

Swiss & SB spent the night inside, and I left the un-sprouted but germ'd green crack and fastberry outside with the 4 randos. I did, however put the clear pot liners I have been using as germ/sprouting hoods over the GC and FB and rigged up a pretty badass little dome for the 4 randos which you can see in the photo. It thundered and crazy rained overnight and when I checked everything in the AM before work, nobody looked super happy except the two ladies who spend the night inside. I didn't really have time to do anything before work and just left as is. As I sat at my desk trying to work — looking out the wall of window in front of me, seeing how fuck't it was outside — all I could think about was the seeds rotting in the soil and never sprouting. Long story short, I ran home at lunch and very gently pulled the tiers out of their large pots and put them into a second 5" peat pot. They both went downstairs to the grow light and my makeshift tent, to hang out with the Swiss and SB for the rest of the day.

Here is the scene tonight:

Makeshift pyrex outdoor tent for the 4 randos. The one thats getting pretty big seems like its going to lean fairly hard, if not all the way sativa with those narrow pointly leaves. It however still might not be as large as the swiss thats a week older than it. The other bigger ones are 6 and 5 days behind the swiss and the tiny one sprouted one day after the swiss. They seem kinda stunted, but they're going to live their whole lives outside and will be put in the ground in about 3 weeks so I'm not too worried. These guys we're trying to raise as natural/wild as we possibly can, other than a little bit of training while they're young [if they even hit that stage before they go to their new home] I'm trying not to give them too much special treatment [you know, other than a mixing bowl and some metal bbq skewers for a roof].

Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.25.33 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.25.50 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.26.00 PM.png

My four plants:

I only had room in my current makeshift grow room for the SB, Swiss, GC and FB.

What we've got here is a heavy duty emergency blanket, some velcro and a 2' x 2' photo hood, which is totally reflective on the inside. Total cost: about $20. I have my 90w [400w theoretical] LED light hanging about 2' above the plants, as well as a 70w incandescent for some heat. Its totally dark in the basement overnight anyway and I'm runnin' them with sunrise so for sprouting and early veg stage it should work. I'm planning on getting a 36" x 36" x 72" grow tent for my next grow, and will prob get it before the fall, incase we run into some bad weather while the last plants are finishing. I really don't want all this hard work to get destroyed by mold. [BTW, is there any organic products I should be using to protect from that?]

Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.26.07 PM.png

Inside the tent, the Swiss is looking like a champion, the SB is still a baby, but seems to be doing well! Green Crack is working its way out of the soil as we speak, and still no word for the Fastberry. Fingers crossed we see her tomorrow. I realized today that I planted the Swiss at the perfect time as far as the almanac and moon cycles say, the SB also got pretty good timing with that. The GC and FB leaned a little on the later edge and closer to the full moon — so it makes a little bit of sense for them to be taking their time.

Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.26.50 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.26.17 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-01 at 10.26.30 PM.png

Thats where we're at today. Calling for mid 80's, maybe 90 this weekend — got a question for anybody who might have an answer...

Swiss cheese has already spend a few days outside, from the time it came out the soil. Its now going to be under the LED for 2-3 days. Do I need to harden it when I move her back outside, since she's already spent multiple full days in the very strong sun? Also, the sour bubbly came out the soil in the hard sun and showed its first baby leafs to it. Does that need to harden still too?

Best to everybody!

WHAT UP ALL?

Had a crazy week and took off to go camping for the weekend. Weather for the past few days has been beautiful/hot, up in the low 90's today. When I got back from camping earlier this afternoon I couldn't believe how much everything had grown. Because it was going to be so hot and I only had about 1 day of hardening going on I left the swiss cheese and 3 autos under the LED indoors and the 4 randos spend their time outside. They got transplanted on friday early afternoon to #1 pots before we took off for the weekend. They all seemed super happy and have done some considerable growth in the past few days, seem to be getting a little back on track after the chilly weather their first couple weeks slowed the down. Here's picture of the biggest one and another one thats about the size of the rest.

Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.48.09 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.48.15 PM.png

I took the autos and swiss out to start getting them used to full sun when I got home. They'll get prob 4 hours today, 6-7 tomorrow and just stay put on tuesday or wednesday. The swiss cheese has started on its third node and is looking great. The green crack and fastberry have both doubled in size since friday. the sour bubbly def grew, but not as much as everybody else. I think I gave her a little bit too much water before I left, she started looking a lot better after being outside and drying out a bit. Overall, everything seems to be on great track.

Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.46.52 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.47.13 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.47.32 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.47.04 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.47.22 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.47.48 PM.png

In other news, the rest of the garden is GOING NUTS! I couldn't believe how different it looks than it did in my post from last friday. Harvested a bunch of spinach/kale/chard when I was watering this afternoon, and ended up getting what would equate to a bunch of each from the store — so pretty much already covered the cost of the starts.

Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 3.48.00 PM.png Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 4.12.35 PM.png

Peace out, hope everybody had a kick ass weekend!

Happy sunday rollitupers!!!

Quick update on progress. Took all these pictures yesterday, so far almost everybody is doing pretty damn well!!! Here a full pic of the garden, its really starting to grow up. Tiny tomatoes and peppers are popping up everywhere, and the pumpkin seems hellbent on taking over the entire garden if it can. There is a couple new additions, in the form of two sunflowers and two giant marigolds [far right against the fence]. They should get pretty big over the next month, and hopefully will provide a nice little natural green screen.

Screen Shot 2015-06-13 at 12.50.50 PM.png

Onto the ladies!!!

The swiss cheese is doing great, just seems happy as a clam.

The fastberry is going great. She is at like 9 days and has completely blown away the green crack and sour bubbly. I transplanted it on Thursday because I saw a bunch of roots shooting out all the holes at the bottom of its bigger peat pot. I just peeled off the outer peat pot and stuck it all in the soil, and buried her up to the rim of the remaining outer peat pot.

Green crack is going pretty well, slower than the fb, but no complaints. I'm prob going to put it in a 10 gal plastic pot on Tuesday or Wednesday once the new moon cycle starts.

So now onto the sour bubbly. She was going downhill day by day last week, and so I decided to put her back inside under the LED. I think it might just been a little too small to move into the full sun [they're getting like 9-10 hours of direct sun right now]. She's been getting a little bit better day by day, so I feel like she's starting to bounce back. Here a pic from yesterday and then one today. I gave her a little bit of foliar spray that was 1.5 oz aloe juice, 1.5 oz coconut juice mixed with 21 oz water. All the other plants got some too. Baby steps with this one. Looks like a wildflower seed made into there too, I'll prob pull it at some point, but I'm lettin' it chill for now. I gave

The four randos are all doing pretty good, one is doing super good. One got a little nibbled on by something, which lead me to find some nibbles all over the garden. I had a friend come over who know a lot more about that kind of stuff, and she said it was a few different things. The swiss cheese had thrips, which was a pretty big bummer, but I guess it wasn't too bad of a case. She suggested some insectacide that was OMRI certified by Safer, so almost everything in the garden [sans the greens, herbs and tomatoes] got sprayed down last night once it got dark. Hopefully all goes well.

So, I guess I spoke a little too soon about everything seeming to go well with the spray. The swiss cheese looks like she got burnt, and has got me worried. See pics...

So a] how worried should I be about this, b] is there anything I can do? Will some aloe and cococnut water foliar help?

Thanks in advance to anybody who has advice!
