I'm Practicing My Cloning Technique: PICS Inside

Described my first attempt at cloning HERE. Still ongoing, clones are doing fair.

Did a poor job at taking clones from mother plant & trimming (cutting terminal end, shade leaves left too large, etc.), but found great advice by West Coast Cultivation . Simple & easy to follow, I set out to try again, this time w/ rockwool cubes:

Hoping for good results !

I have better success with smaller clones. Cloning is very easy, and people tend to over think it, so just keep it simple and you'll see better results

Dray, Check that shit out man! Now that's a cutting! People may say smaller cuttings root faster and sometimes they do, but that's not always the case. So lets say you did cut cuttings half that length, half that diameter, and half whatever, when it and if it roots a few days faster and is transplanted into a cup there is no freaking way in the three days in that cup that cutting is going to catch up to one of your cuttings. Plain and simple, you just cut down ten days veg time, no shit! I promise you! Look at my results, I talk alot, but I also walk a lot. I have pics to back everything up and my success speaks for itself. I don't like cutting down the fan leaves to minimize surface area but a lot of people do and have great results, so I don't think that will cause you any issues. I actually have better rootings results on larger diameter cuttings than I do smaller diameter cuttings. The nodes you've cut off will only aid in rooting as they are sweet spots for roots to grow from and into the block. The paper on the cubes can cause mold issues, but a sulfur spray once will knock that down and won't hurt anything. Just don't overdue it. I've tried scraping the paper off but it's tougher than you'd think. That's one reason I use aero cloners so much these days. What mix did you use to soak the cubes in? Clonex gel on the cuttings themselves?

Things look great man, and I wish my first clone attempt looked half this good. Don't let people hate on you, you've done well my friend! Keep up the good work!

And another thing... Those cuttings are in great health! A lot of the time people take cuttings from un healthy moms and expect the cuttings to some how magically transform into a healthy clone as it roots. Your cuttings are perfectly healthy and now will only focus on root development instead of flowering or trying to get healthy. That alone will jump your rooting success two fold! Don't mist the clones, mist the dome and make sure you let her breath every day so mold doesn't become an issue. Sometimes I let the fresh cuttings sit in the not so brightness but not dark for 24hrs to aclimate to their new environment, but a lot of growers don't and have as good of results.

Yay !

Thanks for the encouragement & kind words, WCC ! My biggest question about cloning was more about he mechanics of choosing the right bit from the mother plant.

My tap water right out of the spigot is about 9.0 until the carbonic acid blow off equalizes it within 48 hours to about 7.5, but I wanted lower pH so I went with a very dilute solution of Flor Nova Grow/ 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of warm-ish water. Knocked pH right down to slightly acidic:

The cuttings have wilted just a tad overnight; clone room itself (200 cubic foot closet) is maintained about 78F w/ 60+ RH supplied by a small humidifier. Misting inside of dome 2-3X/day.

Of course, Clonex Rooting Hormone gel on the cutting ends, and I scraped these instead of splitting the ends like I did w/ the first batch.

I'll post updates, and thanks again WCC ! I wanna make it back to Portland real soon....great city.

Yeah cloning is so easy. I just take small cuttings from plants ready to go into flower, place cuttings in cup of water, clean up the cutting, dip in cloning gel, stick them in a plug and put then in the cloning dome and forget about them for about 10 days. I very very rarely have a cutting not root and live to be a healthy plant. Dont over think it just remember to KISS.

thats funny shit! I keep my cuttings around 7-8" as that's our sweet spot for an early jump. Them cuttings still standing tall or do you have a couple drooping? I'm excited for you bro!

STANDING TALL ! ! 3 1/2 days post clone.

Also started another small batch on a bubble cloner. Twelve site prototype. If bubble cloning works as advertised, I'm expanding to a 30 site model.

UPDATE: We're about 10 days post clone, and have a few w/ decent root growth.

They should all be ready for Solo Cups at the 14 day mark. I used these slightly larger cubes, and would stick w/ smaller cubes and a rack system for the next go.

Overall, I prefer the Rockwool to the peat plugs.

Looking good! I love me a plump white root system in the makings. The first pic, you can see one of the fan leaves is tacoing or folding over. A lot of growers would assume that was caused by too much heat, and at times they would be correct. The reason for the tacoing is because the cutting is attempting to minimize it's surface area of the fan leaves or vegetative growth. The reason it does this is because it can only transpire so much energy at this point and doesn't need the extra vegetative growth. Next time I would cut one maybe even two more fan leaves off that cutting and you won't get that effect and will also lead to faster roots. You can compare it to some of the other clones that may already be rooting or that don't have that tacoing going on and you'll see they have less fan leaves than the cutting in pic #1. Those cuttings look good for ten days out. Most peoples clones by now are crispy and yellow, and hardly hanging on. I would say you'll have almost 100% success, judging by the visible roots and by the cuttings themselves being so green and standing tall. Keep up the good work man! Shit gets addicting!

Gets? GETS ?! I'm hell and gone from "gets" dude, really a hopeless case. Already thinking about the next garden; this one's soilless, and the next will be ebb & flow hydro.

Thanks much for the kind words of encouragement, and the taco lesson.

Peace.

Transferred about 15 clones into Solo Cups this evening:

Just a couple of weeks from getting into final 5 gal pots ! !

Looking good man. I'm shocked more people aren't all over you about your technique. So many people claim to have limited success, specially with OG cuts, and you're knocking it out of the park and everyone turns the other way. Either they have it figured out or don't know a good thing when it's in front of them. Can you imagine where that clone will be in two weeks once transplanted and under some serious lighting? 10 days easily cut off the over all cycle, thank you, can I hanve another? You will notice a serious difference in growth going from cup to final container, and not having a middle container stage. Doing so cuts another few days off your over all cycle and the growth is phenominal! I've always said what I do in 5 weeks of veg (pre veg and main veg) what takes most people 2 1/2 months. Keep up the good work man, looking great!

I'm a rank amateur at this point and I was fortunate to have strong mother plants w/ genetics that made them amenable to cloning but once I figured out just what to cut and where, the rest kinda' took care of itself. That, and all the INvaluable knowledge and advice gained from these boards, plus I researched and read and studied for at least 40 hours or more before I even considered growing, and cloning information was the same; could not get enough INPUT, like that little robot from Short Circuit: "Need input!" (I'm a whore for information, information, infor-fucking-MATION!)

Just remembered to keep things warm and moist; the heating mat under the tray has gotta help, plus that small 200 cubic foot closet is easily kept humid w/ a small humidifier. I'm sure I'll have cloning frustrations in the future as I expand my genetics, but after hitting all my marks with this batch, success feels very, very good. Cloning seems fairly straight forward.

Thanks again for the kind words, and keep Portland weird until I can get back out there.
