My First Grow Box

Hello everyone. I just finished up my first grow box so I figured I would post pictures.

It's a Sterilite cabinet painted flat white. Before I painted, the cabinet was not at all light proof. If anyone plans on making a box like this I highly advise that you paint it. The paint also helps reflect a lot of light. Use Flat/Satin Krylon Fusion spray paint for plastic. I added a thin flat clear coat afterwards. By the way the first picture was taken with the lights on inside so you can see it's very light tight.

I currently have 2 6500k 23W CFLs, 2 2700k 23w CFLs, and one LED panel for lighting. I might take out the LED panel later on depending on how well it works. I have more CFLs to add once the plants start growing.

I have some bagseeds planted. I germed them in a wet paper towel and the taproots look healthy.

Above the grow area is a power strip and timer for the lights. Below is just empty space so I have room to move the shelf down once the plants start growing.

I ordered a computer fan and plan on getting a small clip fan or oscillating fan. I am also considering making a carbon filter and possibly adding some odor eliminating CFLs. Has anyone had experience with these? They sound like BS but if they work they would be perfect for this box.

Also, anyone with experience using LEDs should let me know if it's worth it to leave the LED panel in the box since I've heard that LEDs suck. If this grow goes well, I might try using the SCROG method on my second grow.

Any words of advice are appreciated and I'll continue to post pics if you guys are interested.

Hay jeremy i'm very new to the whole growing experience but that looks great perfect sorta size and setup that I would like to try out.

I tried a closet setup before and have a NFT hydro setup and a 400Watt HID but I really think these are way more than I need and would love to go down the route you are using with those sort of lights.

Anyone have any suggestions of a good UK supplier for these type of lights?

What size/type of closet are you using Jeremy?

Best of luck and keep us posted I will be following your progress myself so as many pics and descriptions of your setup results would be appreciated.

Looks great bro, Ive was browsing youtube vids, and couple of growers did mention they had some odor eliminating bulbs, and said they worked good. But I don't have any personal experience with them, so cannot say for sure.. I mean i figured if they did work, no one would waist money on carbon filters haha. So who knows. Oh and maybe if possible, could you post a link to the box. (maybe at walmart/homedepot where ever you bought it haha)

greenquartz, I have no idea what the wattage is on the LED panel. I tried to find it but it didn't really come with any information. It was really cheap on eBay so that's really the only reason I have it.

BU5T4, Sorry I can't help you with UK suppliers, I'm in the US. But Google is definitely your best friend when it comes to that stuff. The cabinet is 20.9" x 18.8" x 36.5".

When I bought mine it was on sale it seems kind of over priced but oh well.

Mad props mate - It's so perfectly stealthy and it looks so beautiful and clean. Loving the LEDs, it looks like a dance floor in there lol.

How high do you think you can go per plant?

If I move the shelf all the way down I have about 2 ft of vertical space. If I took out both shelves I could grow 3 ft high.
I plan on keeping the plants small though probably a little over a foot or so.

Sorry I don't know of any distributors in the UK but I'm sure Google can help you. The cabinet is 20.9" x 18.8" x 36.5"

sweet this is exactly the same cabinet that i am waiting on. How hard is the plastic to cut? I need to install a couple fans and run some power cords in mine.

justparanoid, I just got done installing a small fan in mine, and the plastic is a pain in the ass. I just cut it with a box cutter.

I also added velcro to the power strips to secure them to the back wall.

thank you very much, I am waiting on some emergency blankets so i can light proof the box. I was thinking of painting the inside white then applying emergency blankets with spray adhesive before i put it together.

I really appreciate the information, your tips will certainly help my build. +rep

Oh i forgot to say that I bought one of those cfls that's supposed to control the smell, but from my use they do nothing for smell. It doesnt cover up or eliminate any smells from what i have seen. Total waste of my money.

Thank you!

I don't know if it's a good idea to use emergency blankets because they insulate heat. Painting lightproofs the box well enough on it's own and if you use flat white paint it will reflect light well. But if you use the emergency blankets make sure you move a lot of air with your fans.

I was rereading your thread, You seem to get good stealth with just paint. I may just try the flat white and see how that does. I am using CFL's and will go with one 120mm fan for exhaust and am thinking of an intake fan but i hear that causes problems in venting.

Yea justparanoid, you're probably going to want two fans. One intake and one output otherwise it can get a little warm and fresh air = happy plants. Here are some updated pics.

I just wired both of my fans to an old laptop charger. And 9/10 seeds that I planted sprouted!

I just sprayed them with a little water when i watered them to make it a little more humid around the plants.
