Seeds on a bud (picture and discussion)

Here's a picture of the top bud on one of the lower secondary branches on a two main cola plant. There's two seeds visible (one on the right at the top and one just right of center at the bottom).

The calyx that holds them has swollen (from the seed growing inside it) to the point where it has split open and begun to reveal the actual seed inside. The seed is still real light green in color.

15 days a go I purposely pollinated that branch with pollen I had collected over a year a go. [side note: that pollen has been stored in a 35mm plastic film canister in the freezer].

So it appears that it only takes roughly two weeks from the time a pistil gets pollinated until you can actually see if seeds are forming and know for sure that something got pollinated some how.

So this is what a seeded bud looks like two weeks after it's been pollinated. I'm sure those seeds are not fully mature yet but will be in another week or two. I'm hoping to take that whole plant another 3 to 4 weeks or so to let the nugs pack on and bulk up.

O.K. I'm stoned and feeling creative. Here's two more close ups of the actual seeds. The first is the top one, the second the bottom one.

Yep, those are seeds alright. I just harvested over 500 of them myself from two TINY autos and one small auto.

Dam it man. I'm bound and determined that I'm going to exceed some one here's interest in this subject...........

Notice that in those pictures that next to those seeds (and else where on that bud) there's fresh healthy young, white pistils. The reason that a seed is not forming in the ovary that they come out of is because.........(wait for it)......... at the time I pollinated that branch they did not yet exist.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to touch my polinating brush to those pistils you see just above that top seed. In two more weeks I should have a couple of more seeds there. I'd go do it right now but it's lights out.

Also please notice the trichromes that have formed on the split calyx (seed sheath) it's self. The seed husk it's self appears to be a trichrome rich enviroment.

Concerning pollen touching a plant and causing a seed to form......notice all those little trichromes around those pistils.....those things are sticky and it's my guess that a fair amount of pollen that a plant gets exposed to ends up getting stuck to them and ends up being unavailable for reproduction. It's almost as if the pistil has some what of a natural, barrier type method, birth control system going for it's self.

Huh. Who knew?

lol! The first time I tried doing this in hopes of getting 200 or so seeds I probably got 800+. They're now a year and a half old and still good. That's where these plants came from. Had a germ rate of 95% and a female ratio of 65%.

Yeah man, I grew some autos and two of the females were only 4-5" tall and one was less than a foot tall. I was expecting maybe ...50 seeds. I got to rubbing the seeds out and they kept coming, kept coming and kept coming. I was blown away. I got over 400 viable seeds; gonna have one hell of a stealth grow this spring!!!

BTW, the two little ones were stunted because I did something stupid - I "kicked up" the soil with some amendments. I KNOW this; I just can't seem to stop the "if a little does a little good, a lot should do a lot of good" train of thought. They got to 3-5" tall and the tips of the leaves started turning like they had been burned. After watching them for a week, they started dying so I yanked them all out and washed off the roots really good, stuck them in my hydro unit and 5 lived, 3 females and 2 males. One female did not seem to be the least bit affected by my fuckup. I may have the link in my sig. Anyway, it was a shocking surprise to see how many seeds I got.

Sorry guys but I just couldn't be more proud if I tried. One of my little girls is giving birth.

Just take a look at that close up picture of that top seed. Now tell me that's not the most adorable thing you've ever seen. Look how that seed is reclinning at a slight angle. Just like you'd hold a new born human baby swaddled in a blanket. Except that human baby doesn't come with a built in blanket covered with trichromes.

I've been fighting that "if a little's good and more is better then too much is just right" credo for some time now.

I hear ya man. If I wasn't over watering I was too much light; if I wasn't overnuting I was screwing up the pH; if I was taking clones they all died - every single one. I think I've made every screwup possible. But I've learned from every one of them and little by little I'm becoming a real pot farmer, LOL. Actually, my last three grows have been really good; only one disaster and that was kicking up the soil mix last time. potpimp,

While I haven't tried any cloning yet it sure sounds like we have some commonality of experience when it comes to all these other fuck ups (or less than optimal ways of doing things) that a man can manage to pull off when trying to grow weed for him self.
