lets say you plant 3 plants instead of 12 and have them under a 600 watt light. will the yields be the same? i hear you can get only 1 gram per watt. will the yields still be the same?
growing styles, will they yield the same?

Depends on how long you veg but on average, per plant you should get a greater yield off the 3 plants because more light will penetrate through to the lower limbs and allow them to grow big and fat. On the other hand the more plants the more yield, no denying that.

yeah, you need to find the equlibrium between light available and the number of plants. i'd be more inclined to lower the number to say 6-8 and grow them out a bit larger
It's all a matter of time! Do you have more time or more plants?
Think about filling a 9 sq. ft. SCROG screen. You could put 9 clones in there and fill the screen in only a "couple" of weeks. Or you could put a single clone in and take "forever".
The yield should be about the same, but the time and the cost involved would be very different!
