high guys! im new (but pretty handy in general and have some general ideas i would like to discuss that i have not ben able to find any info on.
i'm running a 37 gal. tub now with 16 23 watt cfl's and am vegging good but i'm building a new box (cabinet) due to the fact there is just tooo much room for improvement.
My box really is greattemp 001.jpgtemp 002.jpg this is about 2 weeks into vegg with bastard (but decent) bagseed.
youcan see how i mounted my fan into the lid, and my vented reflector, which goes in the box directly over the lights. i found that putting duct tape around the side of the fan and sealing it to the box significantly improved airflow and reduced noise acting as a shroud. My ducting is2 cardboard boxes that i taped together and standard dryer hose that i will connect to carbon filter (maybe? one question nis what is best, ive seen inline ozone generators housed in pvc tha looked pretty slick---but do they work?)temp 003.jpgtemp 004.jpgtemp 006.jpg
My lights are 23 watt cfl half daylite half regular(the daylight bulbs arre much brighter and seem to have more of a blue spectrum) and 3 18" fishtank tubes on the sides. with this setup i can maintain temps of about 82-85 degrees.
It works well but i need to be able to rotate. i am going to build a cabinet with one large flowering chamber 22x33x80 and 4chambers on the side vertically 22x12x24, x24, x12, x20 from top to bottom for vegging, cloning, mother, storage(fert., power, etc.).
i am going to use the same type of exhaust system only make the floor and inside walls out of pegboard for intake and air circulation between chambers.
I am going to mount a pvc pipe 8or 10 inch horizontally in the top of the cab with a y and threaded cleanout cap (plumbed to outside for easy fill) for a feed mix tank and plumb it at least to my flowering pots with emitters and valves (or whatever) and possibly y veg nad mother (thats ultimate plan).
I am also going to alter my light arraingment and addd more lights (6 more cfl 23w daylight) and a 400w hps.
i am going to build tyhe base off the floor 8 inches paint all down there flat black and put black pet screen around bottom for finshed look. The insidde i would like tyo paint with metallic silver over white for max reflect.
I am going to build this cab out of louan (7$)sheet and 2x2's. Ihave the material and will be starting shortly and posting pic's.
Anyway i need to do some calculations on my lights and was wondering on cfl's , when everyone is talking they want to relate to watts but my cfl's claim as much light as a 100w incandescant with 23 w so what figure do i use 100w or 23 w?.the bulbs say 1600 lumens so right now i have about 19, 000 lumens in my tub which is about 5 sq ft which is about 3800 lumens per sq ft (thats not counting the fish tanks.
i haven't done the calcs for the new cab because im not sure how to calculate those cfl's.
my next question is concerning ozone generators. i saw where someone tyook stainless screen on each side of glass and mounted it inline of vent after fan. Does this work? i know it's dangerous but mounted in pipe is pretty safe i am exploring other methods to carbon as it is so expensive ( but works well) but my constraint is that i live in residential neighborhood and can have zero odor. i have also seen high intensity uv systems but have no idea where to get those type of bulbs or if they will produce enough efffect.
Anyway those are my two big questions right now lites and smellers I am pretty confident my new cab will be great and will have pics soon any and all imput and ideas are welcome

Your setup is amazingly creative.

Everything I have read says there is an ideal amount of lumens for growing and a minimum amount of required lumens. The very minimum amount of light required for smaller sized plants grown is around 3000 lumens per square foot. Let me put emphasis on "minimum amount" of light. However, that's not 100% exactly accurate, since although you may have a 10,000 lumen light, the amount of light that reaches the plant varies with the distance between the light and plants, and the reflectivity of the grow area. The ideal amount is somewhere around 7000-10,000 lumens per square foot for average sized plants. As long as the plants do not show burn, as much light can be used as you want to use. (Note, the sun produces about 10,000 lumens per square foot, on a sunny mid summer day). Seems you have a hair over 5 sq feet. 19000 divided by 5 = 3800 lumens per sq ft. That is just a little over the minimum requirement of lumens from your 23s. If you are going to stay with CFLS, go to some 42s.
When people discuss WATTS, they normally discuss the wattage actually used. NOT the wattage equivalant.
Those 82 to 85 degree temps are really pushing the limit too.

ok so it's been awhile but heres the cab one 22x33x75 flower house (2)12x22x24 one for veg one for mom's and an electric house, i made a hood/reflector with cfl and hps integral fan and fans in the top of the cab that can be independently and air intake is in the bottom with pegboard for floor so air comes i vent through floor past plants through hood and out top floors in smaller chambers are pegboard also but that side has its own fan so the flowering house can be isolated from light contamination i am almost finished with this box still need filter house on top for charcoal and a few doors im jones'n right now and old lady just got home so will have more pics and commentary tomorrow, finally found someone who wants to talk (hopefully?)View attachment 330050

ok so ive been busy and haven't had time to post but i'll be around for the next few days and will have more pic's and input.
on a side note i am associated with alot of construction activity so i went to the electric house and inquired about some lighting . the guy at the counter was about 30 years old and had the look of being in the know which relaxed me initially when i asked him about the lights he showed me a 400w hps wallpack (i told him the lights were for my new barn) for 300 dollars i then asked if i could save money buy buying the components seperately and he confirmed that yes i could 100 dollars for 400w ballast fixture and bulb i told him fantastic i take one when he loudly and unexpectedly in front of about 20 people (some of who i know) what i was growing becaus eeveryome who comes in asking about that setup is growing something tooo BAD i was immediately turned off and disssapointed (that is a great deal!) i di=d and will not buy from that store again if he is in the know why not just help me and make the money what was it to him(income return business good rep.) so ende up going to grow shop which is quite far from my home and was treated to a terrific experience the staff was very helpful and polite while stilll showing they knew what i wanted i walked out completely happy with my experience with a bunch of new information and ideas(they have the high tech setups) i did spend another 100 dollars but now now where i will go inthe future regardless of price THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT type of service works well for me

thanx be back soon ejf
