I have a couple of those little fuckers living in my shelf... really annoying and dont want to sleep next to them. help

Sticky traps, plus a layer of sharp sand on top of your soil, and they will be gone in a few days or less.

just any sticky trap for flies?

The ones I have used in the past said "whitefly traps", but I think any sticky fly traps will be equally effective.

You can actually get rid of gnats without any supplies, simply by allowing your soil mediums to dry out completely for a couple of days. I did this recently with success, but it may not be practical, depending on how many plants you have. The plants should survive the dry period longer than the gnats do, although they may wilt slightly.

If this is not viable, consider the sharp sand approach. Sticky traps are great, but they only kill the adult flies. The sand kills the young flies that will soon be hatching out of your soil, if they haven't already started. :o

what do they eat?

what do they eat?

I'm not sure, but i'm guessing the same thing that the plant does. (Nutrients in the soil). All I know is that one day you have a few of them flying around, and the next day, you see loads of little ones in your soil.

I'm not sure whether they eat the soil nutes, or just use it as a breeding ground. I do know, however, that they stick around when the soil is wet, and disappear (or die off) when the soil is completely dried out.

i dont water all my plants at the same time so drying out the soil will be a little bit of a problem. but i'll try thanks for everyone's help

i think they steal food from the plant... but they also feed directly on the plants roots... which can stunt a plant for sure.

i hate gnats.... been using a 'fruit tree spray' from home depot ... its 70% Neem Oil and ALSO has a good amount of Pyrethrum in it. Neem oil alone did nothing for me. The Pyrethrum/neem combo seems to be getting them under control. Only seen one gnat in the past few days. I spray em every day now (just on the soil surface mostly) ... and the plants don't seem to mind at all.

I use ordinary sticky fly traps might not get rid of them all but it sure helps a lot.
i got some yellow shit from home depot that looks like m-150 firecrackers that has a hook with flyshit at the top and bottom... is this shit effective?

ok, i read your dilemma and am sorry to hear about it, but i've got the fucking solution! recently i had the same problem and i ended up getting predatory nematodes. what these are is a bunch of worms that come you can't see with the naked eye, and they come on a sponge. you soak the sponge in your bucket that you have your nutes in for about 15 - 30 minutes, then water your plants as usual. in a few days time you will see those gnats flying all over the place because they are getting their asses handed to them under the soil. this is where those sticky traps really come in handy... there is most likely nothing else in your house for these gnats to live in, so they will die either way, but the sticky traps should clean up most of them.

i'm telling you bro, these predatory nematodes beat their asses!

you're welcome.

lol@ saing our welcome before i said thanks haha... where can i buy them?

ugh. I was just about to make a post about this.

im really curious if anyone knows why this happens?

my first grow i didn't have a single gnat. the 2nd grow I ever did I had a super out of control amount and got sticky fly traps and they did work somewhat until they were full of gnats and then they were useless. my 3rd 4th and 5th grow have produced a small amount of gnats.

So sand and sticky fly traps are the way to go then? The predatory nematodes seems cool but I dont want any more gnats flying around than I already have and I can just imagine the invasion I would undertake! >.<

these fuckers are relentless, they always pop up when i happen to check ou my grow just to let me know that tey're still alive... i have a hard time believing that i'm killing different flies because i always find more in the same spot.. its like they're coming back from the dead
