do airstones help in ebb and flow systems?

Is it beneficial to use an airstone in your resevoir with an ebb and flow hydro system?

If yes, should it be kept on 24/7 or should it be turned on just before watering? And does placement matter? It seems like if the airstone is placed right next to the pump intake it will work better
