first closet grow with UFO

hey i have a closet that is 5'x3' and im using soil under a LID UFO that does 600w. im growing 5 white widow 3 australian blue and 2 other indica/sativa mix. all from seed and most still in seedling stage. what are your opinions on this set up? any changes to be made? possibly CO2?

I don't think you'll have enough light but let us know how it turns out.

The UFO is one of those 80 watt ones, correct ?

yeah its from hid hut its 80w on elect bill and suposibly equivilant to 600w growing...so far its doing pretty well, most all seeds sprouted in 2 days

you mean led? how much did that bad boy set you back? I'm very curious to see how they work. are u going to post pics later?

Yeah I don't want to discourage anyone or start an argument but I looked up information this morning on them. They use 1 watt LED's that put out 45 lumens a piece. They use 80 of them for 3600 lumens but the brightest will still be 45 lumens.

a 600 watt HPS puts out 95,000 lumens and the brightest is 95,000 lumens.

They say the LED's match the growth spectrum better and that is what makes the difference.

Personally I don't believe it.

I'll admit I don't own one and why I asked for you to keep us posted on how it does. Sometimes I am wrong, but don't tell anyone.

I wish you the best of luck. Ive heard they dont stand up quite as well as advertised but at least you got it from a retailer with hopefully a warranty....

yeah ill def keep it posted daily with pics...i think it may have something to do with the fact theres way more red lighting then blue in the whole light..

my local hydro store did a test grow with tomatoes with them and I imagine with herb as well to see if they are worth selling. They returned the lights and refuse to sell them, the LED's just can't touch HID's, maybe in ten years...

Come on, admit it - it's not so much that you don't beleive it, it's that you don't understand it! First of all, plants couldn't care less about lumens! Lumens are just the unit of measurement used to determine how bright a light appears to the human eye (regardless of what spectrum it is). The human eye is most sensitive in the green part of the color spectrum, so therefore a green wavelength (of the same amplitude) will appear brighter than other colors of the same relitive amplitude. In other words - green light gives off more "lumens per watt" than either blue or red. The only problem with this; is that the plant doesn't really use much green light at all. As a matter of fact, most plants (including cannabis) reflect most green light - that's why they appear green to us humans. Do you beleive this part la9?

The part of the light spectrum that plants use most for photosynthesis (almost exclusively) are two narrow bands in the blue wavelength and two others in the red wavelength. This constitutes most of what is known as PAR light (Photosynthetically Active Radiation). In other words - if the plant ain't gettin' PAR light, it doesn't really matter how bright the light "appears" to be (how many lumens it has)! It's like those little Halogen lights, they make great work lights - but they suck for growing. Do you beleive this part la9?

Now, class (for those of you who are still awake) I'm about to bring it all home! :wall: (lol)! HID lights (Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium) only provide about 20% of their light output in the PAR range, so there are a lot of wasted lumens just going up as heat! Indevidual LED lights, on the other hand, only radiate a narrow wavelength, so that their output can be almost entirely PAR light (but still have fewer lumens). Do you beleive this part la9?

And so (in theory, at least) that is why LED grow lights, like the UFO's are supposed to kick ass. Why they don't yield a good crop of cannabis is yet to be proven. On paper they work just fine, some even claim to have had decent results. I'm still waiting for that "LED's Kick Ass" grow report to come in.

Color me skeptical!!!

You really believe that ? If plants didn't care about Lumens then you would have the same yield with a 150 HPS as a 1000 watt HPS.

Looks like you just copied and pasted a bunch of info from websites selling the LED lights, you are probably selling them yourself is why the big lecture.

I saw the test grow where an 400 HPS and ufo were compared and for vegging the LED preformed almost as well, for flowering there was no comparison the HPS left the UFO in the dust!
Oh and THC cammo lumens def matter, of course spectrum is important but the more lumens the larger the yield. You do sound like you cut and pasted that stuff from an led website buddy... How many grows do you have under your belt?

I tried a ufo, It went on ebay in like a month of use because I moved grow closets and I was cleaning out my old one (a month after starting growing with ufo) and here was one stray beaner that must have dropped into my media bucket (small rocks clay balls buncha old nastys). The plant that sat in the bucket in the dark completely untaken care of was larger than the one under the ufo. 10 minutes later the ufo was on ebay.

You're missing the point.. He's explaining the science (correctly).. I'm sure he understands intensity..
Lumens only matter to humans! Plants utilize different wavelengths differently than humans.. A human will see 10W of blue light about as brightly as 1W of yellow light.. Therefore yellow light has about 10x as many lumens/watt as blue light.. Plants on the otherhand see 1W of blue light roughly as well if not better than 1W of yellow light.. That means that 1 lumen of blue light is as useful to a plant as 10 lumens of yellow light.. Its kind of like predator.. He saw infrared wavelengths, not the visible spectrum.. Lumens would be useless to him since the scale is set such that there is virtually 0 lumens/watt for the wavelengths he can see..
And lumens have even less to do with summations of intensity than they do plant effectiveness.. Lumens relate to total output of any light source.. Candlepower adds a directional component.. They may not add without extra geometry, but the lumens will for whatever thats worth..
What matters is the number of photons at acceptable wavelength hitting the target.. That is measured in µEinsteins.. (An Einstein is a mole of photons)..
What doesn't matter is human perception of that measurement..

well the good news is i happen to know my 400 watt HPS is also rated at 132 PAR watts so since you all want to say well you gotta compare the proper thing and that lumens dont count ... thats the PAR wats of a typical 400 watt HPS and a typical 1000 watt HPS is rated at about 450 PAR watts . what do you think the PAR watts are of an 80 watt LED ? because i find it very odd that almost every HID manufacturer posts their lights PAR watts and i have yet to find a single LED manufacturer that posts their PAR watts . they only claim to produce more.. sound fishy to anyone else ?
