I made this filter the other day from materials I got from Lowes and Wal Mart. I have not tried it out yet but Im sure it will work great. You can make it any length that you want. I didn't want or need a huge one. Also, I made a funnel out of a paper plate or you can just use a funnel to put the carbon in between the layers with.

Materials:
2 cans of carbon $5.97 each
1 roll of hardware cloth $8.99
Air Conditioner Filter (not pictured) $1.00
Leggs Trouser Socks $1.00
Zip Ties & Duct Tape (already had these items)
6/4 reducer $8.00
6 in starter collar $4.00
6 in End Cap $4.00

TOTAL: Approx. $40
About half the price as the ones online and I can say I made it myself. Modification would be to use aluminum screen instead of the hardware cloth. Just an option. I am also gonna put a filter or screen between the filter and duct to catch any paricles or dust from the carbon from going thru the fan. Cover both pieces with the socks so the carbon doesn't go thru them and get in your duct. Sorry for the small pics.
