I built an ebb and flow type system since I figured it would be a bugger building one out of PVC and regulating a NFT system. This is just my .02 just seems easier to fill a reservoir and drain it than regulate a trickle flow from a pump. Good luck!

very very easy to do....

find a square plastic container.. heavier construction the best and atleast 8" deep...

also you will need a resevoir, preferably with a lid... simple storage bin from the store works...

drill 2 holes (fitting the fittings you will purchase at your local hydro supplier for intake and overflow).. put the fittings in.. connect the hose to the pump you purchase at the same store...

drop the pump in the resevoir, take another hose and connect it to the overflow fitting and put that in the resevoir.. the overflow will be about 2" -3" high (above the bottom of your tray)..

connect the power supply to a timer.. depending on your medium (hydroton/rockwool etc.).. i use hydroton and flood every 2 hours for 15 minutes, you will flood only 3-4 times a day with rockwool....

your up and running now....

its simple and you can build it cheap... just be careful with the fittings.. make sure you drill the correct sizes..

good luck and i hope this helps..

I would love to share, I am bored out of my mind yet basking in the fun that is growing! I am not saying this is the best system but after reading many forums and articles on hydroponics I figured it was the best system for a newbie, or I was at least lead to believe that.

You don't need much to make an ebb and flow system and the idea is the same no matter what size so you can vary the things used to suit your needs.

Parts I used:

1 fish tank (This is my reservoir for water / nutrients I recommend a plastic storage container I am cheap and had a fish tank.)

1 plastic storage container with lid. ( This is where you grow your plants get a bin or tray the size you want for your setup)

X amount of feet of sturdy material for supporting the growing try above the reservoir.

Cardboard or other material for making your reservoir dark if it is not a dark plastic
Tape

1 foot (but yours might be longer) of 1/2" Inner diameter rubber hose for connecting to pump and plastic fitting.

1 submersible pump. They are rated in Gallons per hour mine was the second smallest one and only cost 40$ Keep in mind when searching for a pump that the general rule of thumb is that you want 30% more flow through the grow tray than it would hold. I found that I couldn't find a pump that would even be remotely close to too small for my setup but if you are going big it is something to remember.

1 x rubber grommet

1 x plastic fitting to attach to hose / pump

1 x overflow pipe, (very important) I used a 3/4 piece of PVC rigid pipe.

Some silicone, good stuff not the cheapest you can get

1 x air pump, tubing for air pump and an air stone.

I will take some picture of mine and share some simple instructions in another post.

u can actually buy the fittings very cheap at your hydro store, they come complete with gaskets.. and barbed on 1 end for the hose..

Lets build it from the bottom up! Starting with your reservoir make sure that it will be dark inside, since I used a fish tank I covered it in cardboard and duct tape, you should be smart and get a reservoir that doesn't need anything done to it. In the reservoir place your air stone, connect some tubing and hook it up to your air pump. Only advice there is place the air stone at the opposite end of your pump or at least not next to the pump intake. Next place your sub pump in the tank. Bang your reservoir is basically done, only thing to do is connect some rubber hose to the pump to get the water up!

So lets move up to the grow tray, in the grow tray you are going to need 2 holes, one hole is for the hose from the pump the other is your over flow. Lets start with the over flow.

I recommend placing the over flow anywhere except where you think you might be planting, in my case I wish I had placed it either smack dab in the middle of my grow tray or more off in a corner. Being a newbie I rushed and placed it way too close to a grow pot. Basically this pipe need to be big enough to allow the water to go back in the reservoir as fast as your pump bring it up to the grow tray. The over flow also sets your water level in the grow tray since all water reaching that height goes into it and heads straight back to the reservoir.

So what to do Cut a hole in the plastic bin just big enough to friction fit the overflow pipe into it. Once you have placed it in such a position that the bin won't overflow and your mesh pots will be covered approximately half way up then silicone it in place.

Next you need a hole to act as the fill hole and main drain, place this in a corner and slightly tilt the whole thing towards that corner for easy draining when the pump is turned off. There are many ways you can do this but the cheapest way I came across was to cut a hole the size of a 1/2 grommet. So we cut the hole place a rubber grommet into the hole, now we have a nice looking hole with a rubber grommet. In this hole we need to put our fitting that connects to the rubber hose / pump. I recommend putting some silicone around the grommet, fitting, and rubber hose to prevent any leaks once you have them together.

Basically that is it, some how get the grow tray above your reservoir which is where the sturdy materials I talked about earlier come in. If I had a big area mine would be sitting on a sweet table that also acted as the grow tray. Not sure where you plan to have it sit but as long as one is over the other the system works. Mine is basically a plastic storage bin resting on top of aluminum crutches that allows it to rest on the fish tank.

I have included some pictures below to illustrate what I can. Sorry my system is really small so not the best for picturing to describe the setup like a big one would be.

First picture is of the overflow pipe (grey one) next to the fill / drain hole in the corner.

Second picture is of the drain hole basically just a grommet and silicon.

Third picture is weird, you can see the side of the grow tray, the crutches I used to support the tray sitting on the reservoir, some garbage bags to cover up reservoir, and aeration taking place in the reservoir.

Hopefully this helps a bit, remember this is just a tiny system and could easily be much bigger with very little price difference just get a bigger reservoir and either a larger grow tray or even multiple grow trays there are lots of possibilities. Good luck

Yep my hyro store was ghetto it seemed they had some lame plastic fittings and grommets. I know exactly what you mean reefcouple and I looked for it at Rona, and the hydro store. Wasn't going to be searching more than 2 store for something I can make work
