Welcome to the future.
Pretty much every place you look for information, you will see advertisements trying to sell something.
Is it possible to run something like the internet, TV, movies, magazines, completely ad free? 100%, zero ads.
Is it possible to have a society without advertisements? I can't really imagine how capitalism would thrive without them, but people would still need things, people would still buy things..
How would that change the way we live?
I can't stand clicking on a link only to be subverted to a 30 second advertisement before, or having a goddamn box pop up midway through a clip that takes up a good portion of the screen that requires a click of the 'x' to return to what you were watching without interruption, or a popup comes up, click the 'x' to close it and ANOTHER fucking popup comes up! The shit is getting fuckin' ridiculous.. I can't even watch TV anymore for very long, commercials just ruin everything about it. You watch 10 minutes of something then a 2 minute commercial, the fuck? I actually timed the retarded shit the other day because I was going fucking nuts inside my mind screaming this is bullshit, 4 fucking minutes for the program to come back on, Jesus fucking Christ! Not to mention the commercials themselves, completely patronizing and holy fucking shit they're stupid, who the fuck comes up with some of these?! Have you seen the KFC one where two people walk in with chicken and grandpa's sitting on the couch, I guess they got the chicken he wanted because his next line is "well paint me blue and call me ____ (whatever the fuck stupid name was used)!" followed by the two people looking at themselves, then "...no really!" as he's holding a bucket of blue paint... WTF? Wat? dafuq? They don't even make any fucking sense, they're just there to sell garbage to stupid fucking people who can barely pull their fat bodies away from the TV long enough to buy some greasy fuckin' chicken.
/rant.
fuck advertisements. fuck commercials.
Welcome to the future.
The dynamic between advertisers trying to wrest your attention ... and one's tendency to just tune the noise out ... is vibrant and eternal. In a society whose economy and social ecology is being dominated by information tech, we can expect ad tech to both drive and be driven by the advances of the info'cology. Jmo. cn

I think it's more than just tuning it out. I can usually do that without much of a problem. And I realize the OP might seem like hyperbole. What bothers me is the constant bombardment in every single place you look. You can't escape it living among people in western society. Even the logo's on the shit I wear irks me in a way that's difficult to describe. It makes me feel like a billboard or a piece of property or something.
Step up and pay the server bill, then it could be ad free. I ran a website once, and traffic/bandwidth is not cheap. If not enough members are kicking in to cover the monthly bill, then ads with click on revenue come into play.
Considering the mission of advertising, it will be every bit as invasive as the law allows. The only bounds on it are the firm's ad budget ... and legal restrictions. The only way I can think of influencing the situation is to beef to your State and national reps/senators.
As far as RIU is concerned, adblock works, and it makes my online experience calmer. cn
