I cringed after writing those first two lines, but they're true. After 16 years in prison almost everyone I used to call a friend has slowly drifted away. Why you ask? Good question. Sometimes it was my fault, sometimes not. More often than not my incarceration was to blame: it was just too damn heartbreaking for them, too difficult for them to deal with. If I’m honest, it was too difficult for me as well. Relationships (even plutonic ones) are just downright painful when one side is confined to a cage. So here's what I'm thinking and looking for.
Ever since I was little I've always been able to keep a secret. It's always been a source of pride for me, and it's always rewarded me handsomely. Remember your teens? Remember how you badly wanted to be with a boy, but were too scared because you knew he would run his mouth to all his friends? Well, I was the other boy. The one all the girls knew would never kiss and tell; and I still am.
