Can you legally hit someone if they're stealing from you?

Say someone takes something from your own house and you notice it happening. If they play stupid or refuse to give it back, can you forcefully take it back, even if it means hitting them, without getting in trouble? I mean, what are you supposed to do... let them leave knowing 100% that they stole something of yours and then call the cops? Not only would that take way too long, giving the thief time to hide/dispose of what they stole, but it'd just be a huge pain in the ass. And you never might get your shit back.

but on the real if one of my friends or someone did that and i knew it id sock the fuck out of them. especially if you brought it to their attention and they denied. people are grimey as fuck dont trust anyone.

You can beat their ass , yes....it all comes down to your statement to police... If you say you saw them steal, confronted them and they became violent an you defended yourself..it is fine...if you say ..I saw them take something and punched them in the jaw..then you will be charged... what did this person take?

You can use physical force to stop someone from stealing from you.

Prolly get you for unlawful imprisonment and assault.
BUT Maybe if you beat the fuck out of them (just enough) and made them keep it on their person
until the cops arrived. Which means you have to beat them, detain them and call whilst making sure they diddnt
unload the merch on your floor. Interesting
