Default Melatonins role in REM cycle

So, there is evidence that large dosages of mlatonin(50mg) greatly increase the time of your REM cycle. Im guessing its the same for lower dosages to an extent. Last night I experimented with this. I took 50mg which was a ridiculous amount of grotesque liquid. However I passed out at Im guessing is 1AM, and I slept until 5:30AM. I had very VERY vivd dreams. It was a fucking trip lemme tell ya.

Now that is 4 hours of sleep and I feel as though I had 8. How is this possible? Was my REM cycle increased to the point of needing hardly any sleep? I have work from noon to ten tonight so Im going to see how well I make it through the day and Ill get back at this thread.

It just baffles me. That is certainly not something to do every night but apparently taking melatonin daily can have a positive effect on the amount of sleep you need. I completely believe this now, since I sleep a LOT.

Of all the known ways to stimulate melatonin production, none is more dramatic than smoking Cannabis. Cannabis stimulates production of a prostaglandin called PGE2, which may relate to its ability to stimulate melatonin production. Italian researchers discovered that testgroups smoking pot had dramatically higher melatonin levels twenty minutes later. After two hours, their melatonin levels were 4,000 % higher than before.

The fact that smoking marijuana is accompanied by a dramatic increase in melatonin production may explain some of the drug's positive effects. A 1995 article in The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that the hallucinogen is being used to counteract the toxicity of chemotherapy, treat migraines, reduce intraocular pressure, minimize pain, treat menstrual cramps, and moderate wasting syndrome in AIDS patients. Melatonin has been shown to ameliorate each and every one of these conditions.

You can imagine my amusement when I came across a recent announcement from the French Research Institute CNRS, showing a direct connection between melatonin and longer life. The Press Release reads as follows:

    "Paris, June 15, 2009

Melatonin - the fountain of youth ?

Melatonin can slow down the effects of aging. A team at laboratoire Arago in Banyuls sur Mer (CNRS / Université Pierre et Marie Curie) has found that a treatment based on melatonin can delay the first signs of aging in a small mammal.
These results appeared in the journal PLoS ONE on 15 June 2009.
Better known as the 'time-keeping' hormone, melatonin is naturally secreted by the body during the night. It is therefore a kind of biological signal for nightfall, allowing an organism to synchronize itself with the day/night rhythm.

At Laboratoire Arago, Elodie Magnanou and her co-workers studied the long-term effects of melatonin on the Greater White-toothed shrew, a small nocturnal insectivorous mammal. Under normal conditions, this animal shows the first signs of aging after reaching 12 months, mainly through the loss of circadian rhythm in its activities. By continuously administering melatonin, starting a little before 12 months, the appearance of these first signs was delayed by at least 3 months, which is a considerable period in relation to the lifespan of this shrew.

Melatonin is now known to play several beneficial roles. These include being an antioxidant, an anti-depressant, and helping to remediate sleep problems. The next step will be to understand the mode of action of the hormone on aging, so we can perhaps envisage its use on humans."

Researchers see a risk in such a dramatic change in hormone levels though, and they aren't likely to recommend smoking pot for better health and longer life, since the connection is not clearly established in man. Yet.

i take melatonin almost nightly to go to sleep. i don't know if it's the small dose (never more than 1-5 mg) or whether i've built up some kind of tolerance, but i've never experienced the vivid dreams that others have reported. people have reported these dreams on small doses, as well. the ONLY times i'm ever aware that i've had a dream is after waking from a sleep, and then "snoozing". the lighter sleep that i experience after waking up and then falling back asleep is the only sure way for me to remember anything.

also, melatonin has a pretty short half life compared to a lot of other stuff. it might have something to do with your own body's ability to "remain sleepy" once the melatonin wears off in your sleep. it might throw you directly into another stage of sleep in a different way than if you hadn't taken it.
    I've chosen a signature.

I've used melatonin for sleep, especially if my sleep schedule has to change for work.

I have found I build up a tolerance pretty quickly, if I take it for a week or so daily, it just seems to stop working

I used to knock myself out with melatonin every night but after a while it just wore off. I'd be awake all night and feel even more tired that usual from having gotten used to sleeping long hours, or I'd fall asleep in the day and wake up 12 hours later. At first I had crazy vivid dreams and then they just became patterns or I'd be prone to hypnagogic hallucinations, which scared the shit out of me to be honest.

So I started smoking pot and producing melatonin for myself. Now I can sleep when I want to...If I can smoke when I want to.

Smoking cannabis dramatically decreases dream recall rates.

Hmm thats strange, I was always under the impression that marijuana decreased REM sleep. I never actually read about it I just figured you were more 'passed out'. I never got as good of sleep.Think this is placebo? Almost makes me wanna go buy some more.. But I cant Im way too tired. Lol

Basically though I made it through the whole day just fine, it was pretty cool honestly!

Weed is too awesome however if I use it too sleep, I cant sleep without it. Same with eating, being happy etc... I have to smoke in moderation or it does not work for me in any beneficial way what so ever
