Default weed as a gateway drug?
I was 12, first year of high school about to start. 1999.

I got high under a local Public school building that was on Christmas break.
I swapped some smokes for a cone with some local boys I bumped into.

I had a bit of a memory blank and the next thing I new I was high as fuck!
Naturally, I panic and run home.
I was satying at my grandparents place that week and my nan knew somthing was up.
I admited to what I had done and after a bit of a talk she said go have a bath and sober up.

I spent the next 2 hours enojoying my high while I built bubble castles.

unfortunatly, I gradually smoked more and more untill it wasn't enogh any more.
this combined with a step father that beat the shit out of me on a regular basis resulted in me finding other drugs.

by the time I was 15 I hit rock bottom and sobered up after a near death experience where I smoked a few bowls with some strange guy at a party (turns out he laced it with something) and my cousin found me wandering in traffic a few hundred meters from where I blazed up, I'd been hit by a car, and they'd done a runner.

after that I was sober until 19 (I'm currently 21).

I now respect weed, and I only smoke after work, in my own home.

I dont drink
I dont do hard drugs
I'm getting married to the girl of my dreams in less then a year.
And I've built myself up quite well by working non stop in Information Tech. since I was 15, and now I could most likely retire if I sold all my investments.

I can honestly say after all this, that weed IS a gateway drug for some in the right circumstances.

BUT

I also agree that in moderation weed can be ok, and in some cases beneficial.

so what do you guys think? gateway drug or not?

my view is it has a lot more to do with other factors in and about your life than the exposure to mj. certainly it can lead to following a particular lifestyle that is inherent of more significant drug use and reliance upon harder drugs to satisfy the desire to detach from reality - but I think it could be strongly debated that there are literally thousands of people that merely just like mj and its high - pure and simple. I know I am certainly one of those. and yes I have tried pretty much everything for the purposes of experimentation and curiousity. I suppose there are those that could say that that could have led to another life path. but it didn't turn me into a hapless addict and the reasons why are numerous. Interestingly enough, at the moment, I have developed a hankering for a traditional and real ayahuasca experience. and I continue to experiment further with shrooms as well, again purely on the spiritual level and the opportunity to enter that dimension.

I must say, you are very wise... +rep for you!

I like some one that can see things as analytically as this, and although I dont agree with you entirely, I repect your point of view. thank you.

I consider weed as a gateway drug if you are someone that has addictive traits. I do not consider myself one of these people. And Although I will quickly admit being one to experiment with Codeine based products twice a year I by no means consider myself a drug addict or a pot head. Yea I smoke a lot of weed. But if you grow your weed is free? The way I see it, im therapeutically enlightening myself for free while "you" go to bars, strip clubs, movies, etc. and have to feel like your constantly racing around just so you don't go crazy when you realize all the stuff your caught up in. Me, I just smoke, saves me money and frustration

we're kidding right? most of us smoked cigarettes first. so wouldn't tobacco be the "gateway" drug? it is a drug. one does get a head rush when they don't smoke and they have a puff or 2 off a ciggy. i see no mention of alcohol. most people try booze first. this title "gateway", is somewhat amusing. it's like it all comes back to pot. isn't this propaganda put out by the media?

here's my opinion in a nutshell:

"maybe the gate was already open, marijuana just happened to step through."

"the pain in ones soul is the gateway to hard drugs."

sorry i'm a little chipper this morning.

i love you
