ferrets rock, ive had 2. had to give them up to a friend years ago when i moved cross country. great entertainment, its amazing the places they get into! like a rat, if there head can fit then so can there body, and there pretty good climbers too... think childproofing a home is challenging? try ferret proofing mine had free roam of the house most of the time and they usually slept in the cage or in the bed. one had a habit of stealing my socks and stashing them under the couch. they are latrine animals like a cat and will use a litter box 99% of the time, but there a little picky so if the box isnt pretty clean they will be tempted to find a corner somewhere for there business. with proper trainning they make great pets, my first i had trained to stay inside my jacket and he would travel everywhere with me, sleeping in my pocket when he wasnt on his leash (you need a leash, they are curious and will wander) sour apple spray is the best thing to use to train them, they hate the smell and taste, and it leaves no odor or stain so you can spray it on anything you dont want them messing with....
