hey guys. im on probation and i got this color code thing where i have to call four days a week to see if i have a drug test the next day. well, i get a possible test every monday, tuesday,wednesday or friday. so basically, thursday would be the best day to do anything cause if i call and friday i dont get tested, the next possible day i get test on is monday. so if you guys know anything about etg (alcohol urine test) i heard it stays in your system 80 hours maybe even longer. i am a male at 5'7" and weigh 125-130. do you think i can drink tonight? i havent been tested in a while so my luck will have it that i will get tested monday. so if i get testmoday will i pass if i drink 3 beers tonight? thanks guys

ETG is a unique metabolite of alcohol, and therefore, if it is present is suggests that alcohol has been present. (Several other tests for drugs test for unique metabolites, e.g. when testing for cocaine the metabolite benzoylecognine is what is easiest to detect and proves cocaine was present). Alcohol itself is rapidly metabolized (the average person metabolizes about one standard drink (14gm of alcohol) per hour. This means that alcohol itself leaves the body rapidly, usually completely within aobut 10-12 hours even after binge drinking. EtG on the other hand stays around longer, depending on the amount of alcohol consumed, between 1-6 days. Thus, its a great choice for testing people who should not be drinking. This can include airline pilots or medical workers who've had alcohol or drug problems and have resumed work on the condition they abstain. Others who should not be drinking include anyone in recovery from addiction, people with various medical problems (liver disease, etc), people waiting for liver transplants, children, people who are given child visitation or custody on the condition they not drink, etc..

The best way to "pass an EtG test" is to avoid all exposure to alcohol, and if you are being tested for EtG, presumably you should not be drinking anyway. The EtG should only be used in people who should be totally abstinent. (For people who are drinking legally there's not rationale for EtG testing. EtG doesn't document impairment as does breathalyzer or blood alcohol, because it remains positive far after alcohol has left the body.)

Dilution by drinking large amounts of water may help dilute a sample enough to cause a negative EtG, however, it will also cause a dilute urine, which suggests attempts to cheat and can have similar or worse consequences.

If you are being tested for EtG, due to its sensitivity, it is suggested that you avoid products, such as over-the-counter medicines containing alcohol, foods cooked with alcohol, mouthwash containing alcohol, and it's even best to avoid hand sanitizers containing alcohol. It has to do with organic chemistry and pharmacokinetics.
