I absolutely love it. I played guitar before I even started smoking weed, but after I started it became an entirely different beast for me. a form of musical expression, rather than a gateway to ego-stimulus (only a few people will know what I mean here.)

so how many of you play guitar out here on RIU? what's your favorite style of music to play? and why do you play?

we'll just start with that.

My two loves are marijuana and guitar, so i like where this thread is going.
I've been playing for half my life and can't imagine what kind of person i would be if i didn't play guitar. Rock and blues are my first loves, but i like to pay every style.
I play regular gigs at bars with my band, mostly classic rock covers, but lately i've been writing funk and bluegrass tunes.
My living heros are Clapton, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. I play a piece of shit guitar that i've put a bunch of work into.
I wish I could post some of my songs or pictures of my guitar, but i feel security-wise that would be a poor choice.

So instead heres some pictures of weed.

I should be getting a fender squier for like 35 bucks haha. I have pretty good luck I suppose.

well my favorite style of music to play at this moment is reggae. I just love jammin to it, it's so fun.

before that I used to focus entirely on lead guitar, so I got pretty good at straight shredding, picking as fast as I possibly could.

I actually reached the point where I can play faster than most lead guitarists I hear. though I need a lot of work, the mere speed I reached was insane.

now I'm just focusing on improvisation, for the past year and a half. playing along to groovin reggae songs that just chill you back. playing the right notes along with the music just makes the music experience so much more intense.

Hahaha, i'm a slow pothead dude. My playing is more groove oriented.
To be quite honest i don't hear a whole lot of music from the yngwies out there. The technical ability required is impressive, but theres no soul maaaan.
Not trying to crap on that style, but it just strikes me as trying to cram as many notes as possible into a bar.

Like sting said, "Its not the notes you play, its the notes you don't play."

around the same time i started smoking weed i started playing the guitar (just watching a frind play it) havent) never bouhgt a guitar but i ended up learning just the times i would smoke and just saw my friend play.
it was great, plus with cannais, it wasnt that hard to learn.
now i dont know what i would do without my guitar, and my weed

i practice and practice and practice and just can't get any better. i enjoy how far i've gotten though.

when I first started out, maybe 6 months later I had a whole summer with a ton of time to play. I played literally 6-8 hours a day. really developed crazy finger speed and strength at the same time that I have to this day.

so I think it's because I layed that crazy groundwork that now I can go on to the more musical side of things.

and @spruce I get what you're saying about the yngwies. I'm actually annoyed by that music. I'm not sure if I said this or not but my favorite style is reggae, and I do nothing but improvise now. so it's based entirely upon what I hear in my head, the music that goes along with the song.

I don't have a great recording setup though, maybe I should get something going. I have recorded a song before though, maybe I'll upload it sometime.

You cats used Elixer strings before?
I've just discovered them, and they are better than the didario strings i usually use. But at about 3 times the price i'm still not sure if its worth it.

I f*cking love Elixer's! I have them on my Tacoma acoustic. I've been using them so long that other strings feel weird to me. I had to replace me low E with a non coated string and it took me a few days to get used to.
