none of the above man. I'd call a tie between cristopher parkening and yngwie malmstein. look up them and tell me that prince deserves to be on that list. eddie maybe for mainstream but prince? Look it up

Yup. Satriani, Vai, and Yngwie don't belong. All technical skill, no soul.

It's hard to say. Page was the best songwriter out of them, but was sloppy. Clapton is a blues master, but his songwriting is/was boring. Hendrix was the revolutionary, but his music and style was repetitive.

Eddie Van Halen would fall into the same group as Satriani and Vai.

I guess I would vote for Jimmy Page.

ps - Steve Howe belongs more than Prince.

Very true, Page was sloppy from 77' and on..That was the height of his heroin addiction and it showed. But id say hes the best. His style is just uncomparable. And he can play many different types of guitar and make it sound amazing.

I also agree about clapton, i personally think hes an overrated musician, sure hes an amazing guitar player but like you said his songs werent good, very plain and boring.

And about jimi, ha also agree. His style cannot be repeated but thats the only way he played, one way in most every song.

First, dumb question. Maybe "Who's the best on the list?" There are too many aspects to judge by. Technical ability. Composition. Improvisation. Phrasing. Chord voicing. I just hate the question, it's too closed ended.

    My Favorite Players

    Hendrix - no explanation needed.
Vai - I loved his last album Real Illusions: Reflections. Lots of cool "outside the box" stuff on there.
Jake Cinninger and Brenden Bayliss from Umphrey's McGee - Saw them last week. Probably the best, most proffecient, tightest group of musicians I've ever seen. The way they layer parts is amazing. Look them up and take a listen to a variety of stuff. You're bound to find something you like.
Rogers Stevens and Chris Thorn of Blind Melon - Not the most technical guys but the way they play off of each other is awesome, especially live.
John Scofield - cool jazz stuff with a new school vibe
Derek Trucks - Probably the most expressive slide player today. He can truly make a guitar sing.

And anyone who thinks Prince isn't a badass guitar players needs to do some research. That weird little man can play. And look up some blue grass players. Some of those guys do things on acoustics with electric cables for strings a foot off of the neck that would make Vai cry.
