I am going to be using lava rocks this year. Just need to give them a good rinse first, as far as I know. Not a fan of gravel seems to tight to grow in. Now maybe the colorful flat stones you can get would be an idea. Anything that drains water really well. Would ramen noodles work??? lol just had to ask?

Rockwool is always a good possibility, and maybe styrofoam but I haven't given that a strong thought yet. I have considered mulch but would have to be some really good draining mulch.

I have always been wondering if there was a cheaper alternative
to hydroton.

Ha, how does a bunch of those cute little rubber bouncy
balls sound?

ya know, the ones you get from the 25c machines.
