I started out in the trades non union,it was hard work with ok pay,not bad pay but not enough where i could see myself buying a home or new cars unless i worked 60 hours a week year round.

I went union & went through appentiship school & learned the trade inside & out, this takes 3 years of trade school, the pay is about 30% to 40% higher than non union work, the insurance is as good as anybody in the united states can get no matter how much they pay,the pension plan is one of the best ive ever seen & blows away most ive seen,a roofer who spends 30 years in the union will get about $5,000 a month at retirement,i spent about 11 years in the trade then swithed trades until finally ending up as a site superintendant in charge of all the trades, for my 11 years where i was an active member i'll recieve right around $2,400 a month when i retire next year, put that pension with my pension from the Operating Enginers union & im going to end up with $4,800 every month for the rest of my life,if i die before my wife she'll recieve exactly 50% of my pension for the rest of her life.

In the state i live in Journeymen make $26 an hour,(rough guess)they also recieve right around $6 an hour that is put in the pension plan by the employer, they also recieve another $5 an hour that the employer sends the union each month & the union puts it into their vacation fund, they recieve a check for all money in the fund once a year,it comes out to where they get anywhere from $5,000 a year up to about $9,000 a year in vacation pay,im not 100% positive on the hourly rate as i have not checked the latest rates but it is somewhere damm close to the figures i quoted, the insurance they get is very good & is full coverage health, dental, chiropractor, hospital stay, eye glass, prescription, retirement insurance & is as good as it gets, the insurance is 100% paid for from the employer, every benifit i quoted is paid in full by the employer with absolutely no contributions from the employees check.

This is all for flat work, where im at the roofers union gave up control of residential work because of the small profit margins, most of the flat work is all hot tar work on factories & very large commercial buildings of a size of 1,000 squares all the way up to 50,000 squares, most large commercial union roofing companys travel nation wide for work because the work they seek is all large work, travel is pretty much required but not allways, when you do travel the employer pays extra money for living expense so the family still gets a full paycheck.

The work with hot roofing is alot harder than residential but the pay & benifits for the family are unequaled,if i had it to do all over again looking back i'd of went union sooner, the few years i spent non union i made less money per year with nothing going into my pension.

This is what journeymen hot roofers do but at a pace about 20 times faster, these guys are a very slow crew & would not last 2 days, they are putting on a 4 ply hot asphalt BUR at an extremely slow pace.

Namaste Solar---they're in the stimulus bill---and they take workers rights to a retarded place---just read up on them. This is Obama's socialist wet dream for America---he gave his stimulus signing speech there, but it's in Denver---the new California

I have been building roads and bridges since I got out of college. A lot of you have driven on my roads and bridges as well. Being able to share your work with the entire country is very rewarding. To work.....Is to live
