the part that you cut is clearish white.
when it gets kind of a pinkish color thats where the blood starts. so stop at the pink part

black nails are easiest, you just take off little slices, the nail will look grey, and when your getting close to the quick you will see a black dot apear in the middle, easier to see than white nails where your looking for a pink dot. it took me months to get good, the main key is you have to be calm and confident, if your nervous, the dog will sense it and get scared and pull and fight the clipping, making it much harder, hit a quick to many times and they may struggle everytime from the memory of the pain. it's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog, i clipped sharpe's, rotts, bulldogs, pitts, for the most part they are very easy, i would say the hardest by far are pugs, lol we had this pug named bear that came in the shop once a month, we charged the lady 20 bucks instead of 8 because it took two people to hold him down and a third to clip him, and we still all ended up covered in scratches by the time it was done.

Love the pug story Beaner. I have had 2 different pug's over the years. Both of their names were Pudgy. I tell you that little 15 pound dog shed 3x's as much as Ike. I know this stuff is off topic. I love my dogs though. |

ive got 8 english mastiffs and have never been able to cut the nails right. ive always kept them all outside until resently i had 1 get sick so i let her come inside. first thing she did was jump on my leather couch and rip 4 holes in it. i tried to cut her nails but i cut into the quick on the 2 toes i did, so i gave up and just took her to get groomed. because the dog is so big (my dogs are from 150lbs-260lbs) they charged me 80.00, and all she needed was a few toe nails cut.
so thanx beaner ill give it a try again, and keep the money for some munchies. |

lol outdoors they keep pretty well ground down, especialy dogs that like to run around, make sure they arent short enough already...they grind themselves pretty sharp outside, and all thats needed is the tiniest snip to cut the very tip off so it's not as sharp. grooming prices are fairyly rediculas, we used to charge 50-60 bucks for a big shorthair dog and it only took us about half an hour of work to wash and dry them, clean there ears out and clip there nails, talk about a rip-off! specially when you can get a nasty cocker spaniel washed and shaved for 36.99. cockers are the worst, almost every one is a submissive peer(they piss all over when ever exited or scared. they get nasty warts and tumers when they get just a few years old, they make stinky matts and dingleberrys, and when your blowdrying them or put them in a kennel after a wash they like to take a crap and sit on it, or in the case of blowdrying, the dryer just shoots the shit all over the dog and wall behind it. worst of all spanial hair turns into tiny splinters when cut with an electric shaver. and dig into the crotches of your fingers and make welts. every groomer in my shop hated them.
i would recomend going to petco or something and just getting a nail clipping, no bath, should only cost 8 bucks and no appointment neccesarry. as for a clippers, if you get one make sure you do'nt get the crappy ones they sell at walmart or petshops, they either don't cut well at all or break after a few uses, we had TONS of complaints, there is one really good brand "Andis" get that brand and you will be very happy with it, they last forever.
